In South Africa, Birthday buddies
In South Africa, a program called "weCAre" provides female chartered accountants with the opportunity to support needy children attending an after-school centre in Yeoville. As part of the program, the birthdays of children born during the same month are marked by a collective monthly celebration. The first of these “birthday buddy” celebrations was held in October 2007.
The theme of April’s party was “High School Musical”. The children dressed in costumes to match the party’s theme and small prizes were given to winners of the various contests in which the children took part.
The highlight of every party is the moment when each weCAre member presents a birthday gift to the particular child that they have been matched with. Says one weCAre member, "Remember that most of these children have never had a birthday party".
