Success stories: Australia

The Australian firm is dedicated to making sustainable social change and increasing awareness amongst our people of social issues.

Building a strong foundation in Australia

Over five years ago PwC Australia established The PwC Foundation to provide structure and clarity to the firm's work in the community in the areas of giving, volunteering, corporate community leadership, and capacity building (providing professional services to charity partners either pro bono or heavily discounted to help them increase their capacity to deliver their mission). Australia now has 21 strategic charity partners across five cause areas selected by staff—health, poverty, youth, children and the environment.

The Foundation’s participation rates for volunteering and giving are some of the highest in Australia—often cited as an example for other organisations. From FY03 to FY08, the funds distributed to charity partners has risen from A$0.7 million to A$3.8 million annually, and the number of people involved in volunteering has doubled from 24 per cent to 51 per cent.

The Australian firm is dedicated to making sustainable social change and increasing awareness amongst our people of social issues. In FY08 the firm increased its capacity building budget to A$5 million to further support our charity partners and the not-for-profit sector as a whole, as well as provide more opportunities for staff to have exposure to the charitable sector.

Underpinning this comprehensive and focused approach is a clear strategy to make an impact in the community, both short-term and long-term. The Foundation's strong engagement with staff, connection with the PwC business and understanding of broader community needs are vital to its success.
