Angola – New General Labour Law

29/12/23

In brief

It was published the Law 12/23, of 27 December, which approved the General Labour Law, revoking the former Law 7/15 of 15 June. Among the changes introduced, we highlight the following:

  • fixed-term employment contracts are only allowed in very exceptional situations provided for and typified by law, thus the employment contract for an indefinite period has become the rule;
  • new disciplinary measures were introduced, namely (i) temporary category demotion, and (ii) suspension of work with loss of remuneration;
  • elimination of the categorization of companies as micro, medium, small and large companies for the purposes of calculating compensation and indemnities;
  • flexible working hours were introduced for employees with family responsibilities;
  • complementary maternity leave was introduced (granted for a period of four weeks and non-remunerated);
  • paternity leave was introduced (granted for seven business days, consecutive or interpolated, non-remunerated);
  • a new chapter on personality rights was also introduced.

This law will come into force 90 days after the date of its publication.
