As COVID-19 continues to spread around the world, governments in Central and Eastern Europe are facing new challenges to keep their communities safe. The measures they take to control the spread of the virus and protect their citizens could have wider economic impacts. We are working closely with a range of national and international public sector organisations to help them in preparing and responding.
Faced with a global crisis, it is now more important than ever for governments and international institutions to work together. Throughout CEE, countries are facing the same challenges: protecting the health and safety of citizens, and mitigating the impact on the workforce and the economy. Governments need to collaborate to exchange best practices and help keep the region resilient in the face of this unprecedented challenge.
In responding to a crisis, governments should aim to minimise associated negative impacts and ensure continued delivery of critical national infrastructure. The COVID-19 crisis has drawn attention to the tools that governments have to mobilise responses for protecting and informing their citizens. This points to a continued need to focus on public sector transformation in order to give governments the tools they need.
CEE’s public sector institutions are facing unexpected threats that require an agile approach. Given the unknown variables surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, it is important to review crisis and business continuity plans, develop different scenarios and put them to the test.
