Chapter 1 Our role

After interviewing business leaders and studying the company’s operations and IT infrastructure, PwC developed a business intelligence (BI) solution that generated insights into how to improve processes and efficiency, reduce costs, and better support business decision-making.

chapter 2 Setting the scene

BSRM Group of Companies is one of Bangladesh’s most visionary companies, with a long history of bold moves. From building the first steel rerolling mills in 1952, in what was then East Bengal, to opening the country’s largest billet-making plant in 2015 (BSRM Steel Mills Limited), the company has never shied away from a manufacturing challenge. But recently, the company faced a very different test: harnessing the analytic power of the data generated by its Oracle enterprise resource planning (ERP) system to boost data transparency and enhance decision-making throughout every functional area. Data coming from various departments was not properly coordinated to allow the company to exploit the insights generated, which is required for them in staying ahead of market to retain their leadership position. This is where the business intelligence solution came in.

“PwC India brought the skill base, experience, and right leadership in place to add value to the engagement. Their team had a solid understanding of our industry, our company, and our culture that enhanced their ability to successfully build a stable and scalable business intelligence system.”

chapter 3 How we helped

Working with BSRM, PwC began by interviewing stakeholders from various business functions to identify their operational and technical needs. The team then conducted an in-depth study of existing processes, including a detailed gap analysis, and recommended appropriate next steps. After a comprehensive system process review, PwC designed an enterprise-wide data warehouse architecture, followed by a data quality framework to validate the data. Finally, the team designed BI report templates for all of the company’s functional areas, including production, sales, marketing, supply chain management, and finance. The reports capture important business KPIs and allow unit leaders to manipulate the data to generate insights. Throughout the project, PwC guided BSRM’s in-house team, helping it build capacity within its IT team to provide the right level of support to the users of the newly operational BI system.

Chapter 4 Impact and potential

Thanks to the new data architecture, dashboard, and reporting capabilities, BSRM is now able to access and interpret data throughout the organization. The greater transparency and clarity allow more-granular insights that can be obtained without manual input. With the increased data maturity, the company can tap analytical solutions to bolster decision-making, both short term and long term.

“The client had a very clear goal: They wanted to embrace the best practices in data and analytics management to streamline and strengthen decision-making at all levels of the organization. We leveraged PwC’s global insights regarding the best practices of data management and analytics to build a state-of-the-art system that will keep them competitive.”
