PwC India collaborated with UNICEF in support of Generation Unlimited to develop the Youth Hub and Meri LiFE platforms

Connecting young people to curated jobs and volunteering opportunities, as well as involving them in initiatives focused on climate change and enhancing environmental sustainability.

Setting the scene

India has the largest population of young people in the world. Many of them, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds, have limited access to learning, skilling, or economic opportunities1. This prevents them from realising their full potential. Girls and marginalised youth face even more significant challenges in discovering relevant job openings, acquiring essential skills, and accessing volunteering programs.

Youth Hub platform

The Youth Hub platform, co-created by UNICEF's YuWaah, PwC India, and others serves as a comprehensive solution, bridging critical gaps for young people in India. The Youth Hub is a cost-free, comprehensive portal that links young individuals to discovering vetted job opportunities, skill-building, and engaging in valuable volunteer opportunities, with a focus on inclusivity for girls and marginalised youth. It provides these opportunities in nine Indian languages, making it easier for young people to navigate the job market.

Meri LiFE platform

Climate change and induced events have a significant impact on children and young people including an increase in health risks, education disruption, and reduced career opportunities. The reality of climate change is not a distant prospect but a present-day circumstance for many of India’s children and youth. By fostering awareness, education, and collective action, India can strengthen its resilience to climate change and protect its youth and future generations from the worst impacts of this challenge. However, youth engagement initiatives on climate change tend to be siloed, sub-scale and lack focus on youth-led advocacy and systemic change. It is crucial to make significant interconnections and develop a sustained approach towards green-ing the ecosystem.

PwC India, in collaboration with Generation Unlimited, supported the development of the prototype of the Meri LiFE Platform – adopted as a green volunteering platform by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change in India. Meri LiFE is a digital innovation platform for young people to hone their green skills, climate sensitivity and leadership towards combating climate change.

Impact

In pursuit of its mission, Youth Hub2 is committed to connecting 1 million young people to relevant opportunities in the 2024-25 period. Building on the success of Meri LiFE, YouthHub aims to scale impact and reach across India.

Meri LiFE3 has already demonstrated significant success, with over 110,000 app downloads and the active engagement of 25.2 million participants in 1.5 million events. Additionally, the platform has garnered 23 million LiFE pledges, showcasing its effectiveness in mobilising individuals for climate action. It has seen participation from 78 ministries and departments across the Government of India, as well as contributions from the private sector and civil society partners.

“Investing in children and youth is the best way to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals and create a brighter future for generations to come. Collaborative initiatives such as this YouthHub are a good way to reduce inequalities and ensure that girls are included and have access to future job opportunities. We can create a lasting impact when young people are involved in decision-making and when their voices are heard.”
