Komuniti Digital is a New world. New skills initiative comprised of two programmes targeted at preparing undergraduates and teachers for the workforce of the future.
The PwC Asia Pacific Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2023 shows an alignment between employees and employers on the critical need to transform to survive. 42% of employees believe their organisation is unlikely to survive more than ten years if it continues on the same path. This resonates with PwC’s 26th Annual Global CEO Survey - Asia Pacific with 51% of CEOs expressing the same concern.
In the Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey, 50% believe that the skills required for their jobs will undergo significant changes within the next five years. Human skills matter most, with critical thinking skills (78%), leadership skills (75%) and collaborative skills (74%) seen as more important than technical or core business skills.
We need to ensure that no one is left behind, and that everyone should be able to live, learn, work and participate in the digital world. Ensuring equal opportunities for learning aligns with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013 to 2025 goals and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which are part of the country’s sustainability equation.
A multi-stakeholder approach is necessary to address education inequity, where system leaders like education officers and educators are empowered to transform education, alongside private sector intervention. The report ‘Digital Skills - Rethinking education and training in the digital age: Digital skills and new models for learning’ further explains the gap between educators and students and the need to train educators both in transmitting Digital Skills to students and integrating information and communication technology (ICT) into teaching methods to bridge the digital divide.
In line with PwC’s Resilient Communities focus area, New world. New skills PwC Malaysia designed an initiative called Komuniti Digital aimed at bridging the digital divide among youth and teachers. Under this initiative, PwC Malaysia hopes to address the barriers preventing students from acquiring the valuable digital skills and knowledge crucial for their future employability, and provide tools and platforms for teachers to digitise their delivery.
PwC Malaysia has delivered two programmes under this initiative:
The ALP is a collaboration with Edvolution to upskill officers from the Ministry of Education, which allows us to amplify our impact on upskilling our nation's teachers. The 8-month programme equips district and state education officers with the tools they need to support teachers and principals to improve student engagement and learning and enable systemic change in schools throughout Malaysia.
As part of the programme, the officers go through virtual masterclasses that involve coaching and mentoring, as well as sessions to deepen problem solving skills, and develop greater data skills.
PwC volunteers led and facilitated masterclasses on data analytics and project management.
“The masterclasses were informative and insightful. Each ALP batchmate had interesting stories to tell and we had experienced facilitators to suggest areas for improvement. I was excited and felt blessed to receive this training.”
The second programme, Kampus Digital, was developed by PwC Malaysia and focuses on upskilling undergraduates for the workforce. The pilot was launched in January 2021 with a local university and ran for two months. The program is still going strong, and in 2023, we are upskilling the fifth cohort of undergraduates. The course was tailored to equip students with spreadsheet, presentation and digital citizenship skills.
