This helps better understand physical and transition vulnerabilities, enabling the unknown to be managed and to allow resilience to be built into planning for the challenges the future will bring.
We are delighted to have been able to apply this thinking in our delivery of The Aotearoa Circle’s Tourism Sector Climate Change Scenarios.
Our kaupapa with The Aotearoa Circle identified that the significant physical risks affecting the tourism sector include:
Rising sea levels, increased lake pollution, loss of iconic landscapes and changing seasonality could lead to the inability to maintain Aotearoa New Zealand as an attractive destination for visitors.
Destruction of infrastructure, rising temperatures, increased extreme weather could lead to a loss of access to key attractions and locations.
Overuse of vulnerable resources, flood damage, rising temperatures could lead to a loss of key species and biodiversity that form a critical driver of the tourism sector.
Increased drought, higher temperatures, reduced predictability of weather, damage to infrastructure could lead to a reduction in operating days and opportunities.
As it recovers from COVID-19, the tourism sector, which trades internationally on a “clean, green” promise, has a unique opportunity to refocus its long-term strategy in order to leave a regenerative industry for generations to come.
Sources of risk and complexity associated with sustainability and climate change are constantly emerging and present both major challenges and tremendous opportunities for business. More than ever, businesses are being judged by their customers, employees, society and investors on how they deal with these issues.
