LinkedIn isn't just a social media platform for job seekers; it's a powerful tool for business leaders and professionals to connect, engage, and establish themselves as an authority. Users tend to recognise personal profiles as more credible than company pages, given the added level of authenticity, therefore proving to be a powerful platform for business leaders to thrive in their industry. Here's how you can leverage LinkedIn to its full potential and create a personal brand that sticks:

Craft a compelling profile

First impressions matter

Treat your profile like a digital business card. Use a professional headshot, a clear and descriptive headline showcasing your value proposition, and a comprehensive summary highlighting your career journey, skills, and achievements. Ensure to maintain an updated experience section with quantifiable accomplishments. When completing your profile, remember it should follow the "Triple A" principle: Authentic, Active, Approachable.

Identify your niche

Don't be a jack-of-all-trades. Choose 1-2 specific areas of expertise where you can consistently deliver valuable insights. This focused approach positions you as a trusted source, attracting followers eager for innovative ideas and inspiration. Aim for 80% of your content to address these chosen topics.

Build relationships and establish yourself as a thought leader

Network strategically

Connect with colleagues, industry leaders, and potential collaborators. Following these leaders allows you to curate valuable content shared by them. Aim to have at least 500 connections. Like and comment on posts from your network and industry influencers to stay connected and build rapport. Furthermore, join relevant LinkedIn groups to expand your network and participate in discussions, demonstrating your expertise.

Networking strategically

Network at events

Attend and participate in online industry-related webinars and events. This allows you to connect with like-minded individuals, share your perspectives, and expand your network of potential collaborators.

Online networking

Content is king

Don't just be a passive observer. Share valuable content and personal thoughts that position you as a thought leader. Create original articles, curate insightful posts, and leverage multimedia like images, videos, polls and presentations to make your content engaging. Visuals and relevant hashtags help to increase discoverability, and don’t be afraid to post opinions or interesting stories as lengthy text posts.

A new feature to try out, which LinkedIn is currently pushing, is where LinkedIn invites you as an ‘expert’ to share your thoughts on a particular topic in an article. This is a great way to expand your reach and make connections.

Make use of LinkedIn's scheduling feature

This can be useful to schedule posts in advance and explore optimal posting times. The typical optimal time to post is between 10am and 12pm on weekdays, so scheduling a post during this time can be more effective, however testing different times remains the best approach depending on your audience and the active time that they are also using LinkedIn.

Remember, personal branding is key

Consistency is crucial

Maintain a consistent voice and message across your profile, posts, and interactions. Highlight your unique value proposition and what sets you apart as an expert in your field. The ideal posting frequency would be once per week.

By following these strategies, business leaders can transform LinkedIn from a simple online profile into a powerful platform to build meaningful connections, establish thought leadership, and propel themselves and their businesses forward.
