PwC Philippines Risk Assurance Executive Director Mark Anthony Almodovar and Senior Manager Eugene Jerome Tan were the speakers at the 2024 Cybersecurity Briefing for De La Salle University Manila, held at De La Salle University Dasmariñas and streamed via Zoom on 5 April. Mark and Eugene were invited to help raise awareness of the university’s Information and Communications Technology Center (ICTC) by delving into the ever-changing cybersecurity landscape and sharing best practices, impactful strategies and solutions to fortify digital defenses.
During the first part of the briefing, entitled “The Chaos in the Cyberworld,” Eugene discussed the evolving digital threat environment, common types of cyber attacks and statistics on the top cyber threats versus the capabilities to defend against them. He emphasized how critical it is to manage one’s digital footprints and gave his insights on how to secure one’s accounts and recognize social engineering, which is a type of cyberattack that attempts to manipulate users into making security mistakes and/or divulging sensitive information. Finally, to promote a more unified and proactive response to cyber threats, he gave several tips on becoming a responsible owner of digital data.
Mark led the second part of the briefing, which focused on risk management and the cybersecurity framework. His presentation touched on the complexities of effective risk management; how to identify, quantify and classify risks in terms of priority level; and the increasing threat of data breaches and the proper procedure to contain them. He also talked about the responsibility of each individual in an organization with regards to maintaining a robust cybersecurity network, whether they are a leader or a staff member, and whether the data is their own or that of the university.
The 2024 Cybersecurity Briefing for De La Salle University was a highlight event for the university, drawing De La Salle employees from different branches. The event served as a platform for faculty and staff to gain valuable insights and knowledge, further strengthening the local cybersecurity community's capacity to navigate the evolving digital landscape.
Also present during this briefing was Risk Assurance Cybersecurity Specialist and Senior Associate Alessandro Mari Basa.
