We are a family of four. Since the pandemic started almost two years ago, our father lost his job and our mother was left trying to make both ends meet.
In December, as the country embraced the second Christmas season in lockdown due to the pandemic and the devastating impact of typhoon Odette to the lives of farmers in Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental, my family and I traveled to the area to share food and rice for some 500 individuals and farmers. I realized that it is ironic that those who plant and provide us food are the ones lacking the resources to buy a decent meal for their families.
Last week was my father’s birthday. As I went home, I saw mom cooking pansit for the family. When she saw me, she asked me to help her and said,
“Bihira lang naman tayo mag-celebrate anak. Atsaka para sa papa mo ito. Ang dami na nyang naibigay sa atin. Kahit man lang pansit, mapaghanda natin sya!”
It was a heart-warming moment realizing that one’s worth is not based on your ability to earn an income.
