US International Tax Financial Services Leader, PwC US
Thomas Groenen is an International Tax Partner in the New York Office of PwC serving asset management clients in the alternative investment community (private equity, hedge, special situation and venture capital firms). Thomas also leads the U.S. International Tax Financial Services practice.
Thomas, originally from the UK, has 19+ years experience working in London and NYC with global financial services clients. He is particularly focused on helping UK-based asset managers navigate the U.S. tax system as they establish their U.S. presence and raise and deploy capital. Conversely, he provides the same services to U.S.-based clients investing internationally advising them on complex cross border tax issues.
In an industry where minutes equal dollars (or pounds!) and where there is increasing and ever-changing regulation and scrutiny, Thomas is accustomed to advising clients under the tightest of deadlines. He diagnoses complex tax issues deeply and responds rapidly to his clients with advice that is practical, pragmatic and proactive. He also carefully monitors potential new international tax regulations that may impact his clients (BEPS and dynamic International tax landscape for example) and advises them accordingly.
When not serving clients, Thomas is an active thought-leader in the asset management industry, actively contributing to PwC’s client-facing publications. He was recently selected to chair PwC’s Global Private Equity Thought Leadership Committee which will evaluate and identify hot topics of interest to deal professionals, across the firm’s three lines of business.
Thomas is a sought after speaker at global conferences and has recently spoken at the Wall Street Association (WTA) on cross-border investing and loan origination. The American Investment Council recently published his article on PE Deals in the New International Tax Environment.
Thomas graduated from the University of Warwick (UK) with an Honors degree in Law (U.S. equivalent to JD), and is a qualified Chartered Accountant. He received his ACA from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales.
