How health systems can meet workforce needs with advanced practice providers

Advanced practice providers (APPs) are becoming essential to healthcare operations as health systems face mounting physician shortages, rising costs and long patient appointment wait times. APPs include advanced practice registered nurses such as nurse practitioners, certified registered nurse anesthetists, certified nurse midwives and physician assistants.

Nearly half a million APPs serve across diverse clinical settings, as of 2023, offering high-quality, cost-effective care. Demand for APPs is being driven by an aging population, increased patient volumes and a projected physician shortfall of 86,000 by 2036.

Despite the benefits of APPs to improve access and reduce costs, several challenges remain. There are varying state laws, compensation disparities between APPs and physicians, differing reimbursement policies and limited autonomy in some states. Role ambiguity, ineffective communication and inconsistent resource support can further hinder APP effectiveness and job satisfaction.

Maximizing the benefit of APPs requires more than increasing their numbers. A comprehensive strategy is needed to alleviate workforce pressures, improve patient care and deliver strong financial returns. Health systems that fully integrate and empower APPs can be better equipped to meet future healthcare demands.
