Interview with

Francisco Gutiérrez
Digital Financial Transformation Leader at Metalsa

What was the challenge?

Metalsa has been using the Oracle E-Business Suite solution since 2003. After a thorough analysis, we decided to migrate to Oracle ERP Cloud, starting our finance transformation in 2021. To carry out this transformation, we assigned a full-time multidisciplinary group of users who were specialists in business processes and had in-depth knowledge of Oracle E-Business Suite. In addition, we needed a strategic collaborator with experience in digital transformation. We wanted to facilitate a smooth adoption of Oracle Cloud and enable the company to replicate the solution in each plant and region we operate. To this end, we carried out a formal evaluation process and selected PwC Mexico for this important project.

We wanted to facilitate a smooth adoption of Oracle Cloud and enable the company to replicate the solution in each plant and region we operate.

What was the solution provided by PwC?

The PwC Mexico team offered us a holistic approach that included an implementation methodology, project monitoring and control tools, as well as experience in similar implementations. In the first meetings, after addressing contractual and legal issues, we jointly rethought some strategic aspects. We then established a work plan to implement a global model that included cloud modules for ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), SCM (Supply Chain Management), Oracle Payroll for Mexico, which is integrated with HCM (Human Capital Management) and EPM (Enterprise Performance Management). We began by implementing this model in our corporate headquarters and in the Saltillo plant. We then rolled it out in Apodaca, our largest plant, which required significant additional effort to implement. At the same time, PwC Mexico set up the Guanajuato plant, which our internal team put into operation once we had the capacity installed to continue with the implementations autonomously.

How does the solution combine with the strengths of technology and people?

We are aware that technology brings greater benefits to the extent that people master its functionalities. For this reason, the PwC Mexico team provided us with “hyper care” technical support during the two months following the start of operations in Oracle ERP Cloud, both in our corporate offices in Monterrey and in the Saltillo plant. This support helped us stabilize the system quickly and efficiently. An example of this support was the accompaniment of PwC Mexico to our functional areas during the first two monthly financial closings, enabling the execution of the functionalities with the new Oracle ERP Cloud platform.

At what point was innovation or new ways of solving a problem introduced?

Innovation was introduced when the consulting team proposed an implementation strategy called “big bang.” This strategy consisted of integrating all the functions of the Oracle ERP Cloud modules simultaneously. Through Oracle ERP Cloud, we covered both the central financial part and the supply chain, in addition to integrating the Mexican payroll. In close collaboration, our users and the PwC consulting team supported us in developing specific third-party solutions to meet the requirements established by different international regulations. Today, we have a global model and technology that can be replicated in the different countries where Metalsa is present. This could open the door for the future implementation of solutions with emerging technologies in our business model to continue boosting our growth.

"Our goal is to digitize the Finance function, so all finance executives are able to provide business recommendations based on financial insights."
