Russell is a Director in PwC’s financial services tax practice, which he joined in 2011.

Russell first joined PwC’s UK firm in 2005, initially with a focus on oil and gas before transitioning to the financial services tax practice. He transferred to PwC Canada’s financial services tax practice in 2011, where he has established more than 10 years experience of servicing a range of clients in the financial services sector, including insurance, leasing, banking and capital markets.

Russell’s diverse portfolio of clients within the financial services sector means he has a diverse range of specialties with assisting both financial institutions and other clients.

He has a particular focus on leasing companies, including navigating and applying the complex specified leasing property tax regime.

His portfolio of insurance clients includes advising both P&C and life insurance clients. He has been actively involved in developing PwC’s internal and client response to assessing the taxation of insurers under IFRS 17, including co-developing PwC’s models assessing both the general model and premium allocation approach. Russell has been actively involved with supporting insurance industry initiatives with respect to understanding the tax implications of IFRS 17 to date. He also has experience with assisting clients navigate taxation issues associated with establishing a captive insurance company.

  • Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)
  • Obtained first class honours in Computing Science (BSc) from the University of Aberdeen
