Lars’ career has been defined by a proactive approach to digital transformation. His experience spans across analytics-driven valuation, financial due diligence, and strategic reporting - leveraging AI, automation, and data insights to improve decision-making processes. His journey shows that staying ahead in Deals requires not just technical expertise, but the ability to continuously evolve with emerging technologies.
What have been the highlights of your career at PwC?
“One major highlight has been working on the development of new service offerings within Deals in Norway. Over the past few years, we’ve built a dedicated team that combines traditional financial analysis with emerging technologies like AI, Alteryx, and Power BI, helping clients extract long-term value from their deal insights. Being part of this transformation has been incredibly rewarding.”
How has the Edge programme supported your growth?
“The Edge programme played a crucial role in broadening my skill set. Through rotations across Transaction Services, Strategy& (then Deal Strategy), and Valuation & Analytics, I was able to integrate strategic thinking with advanced analytics - giving me a unique edge in digital transformation. Additionally, the international Edge community made it easier to collaborate and exchange ideas on technology adoption across borders.”
How has emerging technologies and innovation helped you accelerate your career?
“Two key factors: embracing new technologies and a diverse project portfolio. Early on, I identified how tools like Power BI and Alteryx could optimise financial modelling, and I pushed to integrate them into our workflow. As technology evolved, so did I. PwC’s strong focus on digital transformation has provided me with access to cutting-edge tools, upskilling opportunities, and an environment where innovation is encouraged. The Edge programme also played a role, allowing me to rotate across different teams, and connect with a global network that continues to push innovation forward. This combination of tech-driven problem-solving and cross-functional experience has been key to my growth.”
What has been your most exciting project?
“I was part of a cross-geography team working with a Nordic-based private equity client to enhance reporting and insight from their portfolio companies. The challenge was to move beyond traditional financial due diligence and ensure that insights weren’t just used for deal decisions but were embedded into long-term value creation. This project underscored how technology isn’t just about efficiency but it’s also about making better strategic decisions.”
What advice would you give to graduates looking to grow in Deals?
“Innovation doesn’t happen by waiting for change - you need to identify opportunities and push for improvements, whether it’s through technology, processes, or client interactions.”
“Integrating technology in Deals has helped me make faster, more informed decisions and expand what's possible in financial analysis. Staying ahead means actively embracing innovation - not just following trends.”
Andrey is bridging finance and technology to transform the way Deals valuations are done. His Python-based web application has streamlined financial modelling, cutting hours of manual work down to minutes while reducing human error. As a Deals Digital Champion, he explores emerging technologies like GenAI, helping teams work smarter, faster, and with greater precision. For Andrey, innovation goes beyond new tools by creating better, data-driven solutions.
What have been the highlights of your career at PwC so far?
"I’ve had multiple highlights, but the most rewarding has been the ability to combine my interest in technology and coding with real client engagements. Through internal initiatives, training, and hands-on experience, I’ve expanded my technical skills while also developing a deeper understanding of Deal Advisory. The Edge programme gave me exposure to different teams and industries - whether working with large international corporations or fast-growing startups - which has accelerated both my professional and personal growth."
How have you been involved in emerging technologies and innovation?
"My involvement has been quite hands-on. During my rotation in the Deals Analytics team, I worked on an initiative, where we leveraged Microsoft’s cloud-based AI and data services to develop advanced analytical solutions for Deals. The goal was to enhance data-driven decision-making and save time in financial modelling. Additionally, as part of the Deals Digital Champion programme, I actively explore and introduce new technologies like GenAI and ChatPwC, enabling teams to incorporate AI-powered insights into their work."
Can you share a project where technology made a real impact?
"One of the most impactful projects I worked on was in valuation modelling. Traditionally, we used Excel-based models that required three to four hours of manual work, making them prone to errors. To streamline and speed up the process, I worked with a small team to develop a Python-based web application that reduced this process to just five minutes. This tool has already been adopted by different teams and is proving invaluable in improving both accuracy and efficiency in financial modelling."
How has the Edge programme supported your development?
"One of the biggest benefits of Edge was the structured rotations, which allowed me to see the bigger picture of the deal lifecycle and find opportunities for cross-team collaboration. It also connected me with mentors, training, and a strong professional network, which helped me develop both technical and business acumen."
What advice would you give to graduates and new joiners who want to work with emerging technology?
"Surround yourself with people who share your passion for innovation, because collaboration makes learning faster. And most importantly, don’t just learn - test your ideas, experiment, and build something new."
“Innovation means rethinking how we work - using automation and AI to boost efficiency and enhance decision-making in Deals analytics.”
From the start of her career, Marta has embraced data analytics integration in financial assessments, recognising its potential to enhance accuracy and efficiency. During her secondment to PwC UK, she explored AI-powered tools and has brought her learning back to Spain where she continues to embed automation and AI-driven solutions into her work, ensuring that technology enhances decision-making rather than just streamlining tasks.
How has technology influenced your career in Deals?
"Early on, I realised how much value data analytics and automation could bring to financial due diligence. Instead of relying purely on traditional methods, I explored ways to integrate AI-driven tools into analysis, which provided deeper insights and greater efficiency. My secondment in the UK gave me exposure to platforms like Harvey and Data Studio, showing me firsthand how technology is reshaping how we work. Now, I actively apply these tools to enhance decision-making in my projects back in Spain."
How has your secondment shaped your approach to digital transformation?
"I got hands-on experience with AI-powered solutions and saw how automation is integrated into workflows. It made me more confident in bringing these ideas back to my work in Spain. The experience also reinforced how important it is to stay adaptable and continuously upskill in emerging technologies."
How has the Edge programme supported your development?
"Edge gave me access to a global network of professionals who are equally passionate about innovation in Deals. Being part of the programme helped me sharpen my analytical skills, gain exposure to different working styles, and collaborate with teams that are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with digital tools. It’s not just about learning new technologies - it’s about knowing how to apply them in a way that adds value."
What advice would you give to professionals looking to embrace technology in Deals?
"The way we work is evolving rapidly, and those who take the initiative to learn and experiment with new tools will be the ones who drive meaningful impact. Don’t be afraid to challenge existing ways of doing things - sometimes the best solutions come from asking, ‘How can we do this better?’"
“For me, the question is always: how can we do this better? Integrating digital tools into financial due diligence improves accuracy, efficiency, and the way we deliver insights.”
David’s journey is about exploring how AI and automation enhance financial processes. His natural curiosity and willingness to experiment with technology led him to develop AI-powered workflows that optimise data analytics and streamline deal execution.
How has technology shaped your career in Deals?
“I’ve always been drawn to technology, and working in Deals has given me the chance to experiment with AI, automation, and data analytics in a way that makes a real impact. One of my favourite use cases was using GenAI to seamlessly convert code between Alteryx and Power Query - what would have taken hours manually was done in minutes. That’s when I realised the potential of emerging tech to completely change how we work.”
What’s the biggest challenge when integrating AI into your work?
“The challenge isn’t the technology itself - it’s how people perceive and use it. AI and automation won’t replace expertise; they make our work more efficient and insightful. The key is getting people comfortable with these tools so they can focus on adding strategic value rather than spending time on repetitive tasks.”
How has the Edge programme supported your growth in this space?
“Edge exposed me to different areas of Deals and gave me the confidence to explore how technology could improve our work. As a Digital Champion, I’ve had the chance to train others, test new AI applications, and contribute to digital upskilling efforts across the firm. PwC has created an environment where curiosity is encouraged, and that’s been a huge enabler for my career.”
What advice would you give to those looking to embrace emerging tech in finance?
“Get hands-on with the tools available. The best way to understand AI and automation is by experimenting with them. Also, don’t wait for someone to tell you to innovate - find inefficiencies in your work and see how technology can solve them. That’s how you stay ahead in a rapidly changing industry.”
“PwC has created an environment where curiosity is encouraged, and that’s been a huge enabler for my career.”
Carmen’s passion for technology and digital transformation has shaped her career. She moved to PwC Ireland on a permanent transfer from PwC Spain, embracing new ways of working just as technology itself continues to evolve. PwC’s strong investment in emerging technologies and digital upskilling has provided the platform for her to continuously evolve, ensuring she stays at the forefront of transformation in Deals.
What have been the highlights of your career at PwC so far?
"One of the biggest highlights for me was my transfer to PwC Ireland. I started in Spain and after two years with the Edge programme, I transferred to Ireland. That experience broadened my perspective and exposed me to more innovative ways of working. Beyond that, being part of the EMEA Deals Tech Enablement community has allowed me to collaborate with experts across the region and contribute to AI trials, such as the implementation of Copilot and Harvey, which are transforming the way we approach financial analysis."
How has the Edge programme supported your development?
"Edge gave me the foundation to explore different areas within Deals, but what really made a difference was the network. Through the Tech Enablement community, I’ve worked alongside specialists across markets, gaining exposure to cutting-edge AI applications. Being part of these innovation trials has given me a front-row seat to how emerging technologies are reshaping the industry."
Can you share an example of an innovative solution you've worked on?
"One project I’m particularly proud of involved using Power BI to consolidate complex financial models across multiple countries. These models were previously difficult to manage in Excel due to their size and complexity, but by building an interactive Power BI solution, we made them more accessible, visual, and dynamic for clients."
How do you stay ahead of the latest tech trends?
"Being part of the Tech Champions group in Ireland has been a game-changer. We meet regularly to test new technologies, exchange insights, and run pilots on emerging AI tools. It’s a collaborative effort. This keeps me constantly learning and helps ensure that PwC is ahead of the curve when it comes to digital adoption."
“Technology is evolving fast, and so am I. Being part of innovation communities at PwC has helped me embrace AI and automation, turning emerging technologies into real value for Deals.”

Over time, I’ve taken on a bigger role in helping others build these skills. The more I explored emerging technologies, the more I realised how crucial they are for driving efficiency and deeper insights in financial transactions."

How has the Edge programme supported your development?
"Edge has been instrumental in shaping my career by providing opportunities beyond just technical learning. It’s connected me with a global network of professionals who are driving innovation in Deals, and I’ve had the chance to be actively involved in both the EMEA Deals Tech Enablement community and the Edge onboarding process as a coach. Being able to guide new joiners in their own digital journeys has been incredibly rewarding and has reinforced how much technology is reshaping our industry."
What advice would you give to graduates starting their careers?
"Don’t wait for the ‘perfect’ opportunity - be proactive and explore different areas, especially in technology. Some of the most valuable career growth happens when you lean in, even in areas you had not previously considered. The more curious and adaptable you are, the more doors will open. Also, build relationships - collaborating with people in different teams and regions has been one of the biggest accelerators for my own development, as well as being great fun!"

Balancing Olympic-level gymnastics with a Deals career is a testament to PwC’s flexibility. He was able to structure his workday around his training schedule, proving that high-performance careers can coexist with personal passions when the right support is in place.
How did you manage to balance your preparation for the Olympics with your career at PwC?
“Communication was the key. I worked closely with my colleagues to set clear expectations and created a structured schedule that allowed me to train around work I followed strict rules—sleeping at least 8 hours, staying connected with family and friends, and making time for fun activities. It was a challenge, but the support of my team made it possible.”
What role did flexibility at work play in achieving your Olympic goals?
“Flexibility was everything. I started my day early, adjusted my hours, and leaned on my team for support when I was training. PwC’s Elite Sports Leave was a game-changer, giving me ten extra days to focus solely on gymnastics before the Olympics. Without this flexibility, balancing both worlds wouldn’t have been possible.”
Can you describe a typical day in your life during this period?
“On days I combined work with gymnastics, my day started at 8 AM with work until noon. After that I headed to the gymnastics arena for an intense training session until 3:30 PM, returning to the office by 4 PM to finish work up until 8 PM. I had to condense my gymnastics training, which normally lasts 3.5 hours, into shorter, more efficient sessions. Making every minute count.”
How has your Olympic journey influenced your work at PwC?
“There are so many parallels between gymnastics and consulting. Both require meticulous planning, the ability to perform under pressure, and resilience in the face of setbacks. Gymnastics taught me how to break big challenges into manageable steps—a skill that’s invaluable in Deals. I also learned the importance of communication and teamwork, which are critical in both arenas.”
What support did you receive from PwC during this journey?
“The support from my team was incredible. My colleagues stepped in to cover meetings while I was training and helped me structure my workload so I could catch up in the evenings, giving me the confidence to pursue both dreams.”
What have been the highlights of your career at PwC so far?
“The Edge programme itself has been a highlight—rotating through different departments, working on diverse projects, and forming strong bonds with colleagues. The trip to Madrid with my cohort was unforgettable, as was the camaraderie during projects and ski trips. These experiences, combined with the support I received for my Olympic dream, have made this a very special journey.”
What advice would you give to graduates balancing major personal and professional goals?
“Anything is possible if you’re willing to plan and communicate. Don’t hesitate to ask for help and present a clear proposal on how you’ll manage both responsibilities. Be disciplined, but also prioritise balance—sleep, family, and personal connections are just as important as your goals. If you’re determined and proactive, people will support you.”
“Balancing the demands of training for the Olympics with a career in PwC’s Deals team was challenging and sometimes very tough. However, with the flexibility and support of my PwC colleagues, I was able to pursue both goals successfully.”

The flexibility PwC offers has been key in balancing my work with personal commitments, like studying for my final accounting exams and playing hockey.”
How do you manage to balance work, sports, and personal commitments?
“It’s all about communication and routine. I’ve worked with my team to adjust my hours, like starting earlier so I can make time for hockey in the evenings. Playing hockey helps me switch off from work, recharge mentally, and stay physically active. I also make time for socialising with colleagues and friends, which keeps me grounded and motivated.”
What role does teamwork play in your career at PwC?
“Teamwork is at the heart of everything I do. Whether it’s collaborating with colleagues to resolve client issues or working with my hockey team on the pitch, the same principles apply - open communication, shared goals, and trust. I’ve found that the skills I’ve developed in sports, like perseverance and adaptability, directly translate to the workplace.”

How did your secondment to Zurich shape your career?
“My secondment to Zurich was initially meant to last six months, but I loved the work environment and team so much that I stayed. It was a pivotal moment for me, as it allowed me to deepen my expertise in M&A and expand my international network.”
What motivates you to stay at PwC?
“I enjoy the work and the opportunities for growth through engaging projects that PwC provides. PwC is truly committed to investing in its people. I wanted to sharpen my communication skills, so I took acting classes in New York. PwC’s flexibility and culture of continuous development gave me the space to make it happen. Beyond public speaking, the experience helped me refine my presence, read the room, and communicate more effectively under pressure. Stepping outside my comfort zone like this has transformed how I present ideas, lead discussions, and build relationships with clients and colleagues.”
What advice would you give to graduates or new joiners?
“Give your best in every task, no matter how small. If you’re not sure about your career path, use rotations to explore different areas. Once you know what you want, push forward and don’t be afraid to ask for opportunities. Hard work and curiosity will always pay off.”

“One of the most exciting projects I worked on was a cross-border ESG due diligence deal involving multiple PwC offices. The client, based in Abu Dhabi, had investments spanning the UK, Japan, Dubai, and India. I collaborated with teams from each region, and we compared ESG due diligence practices across markets to refine our recommendations. Thriving in Deals requires more than technical expertise - it demands the ability to stay sharp, focused, and resilient in a fast-paced environment. For Philip, resilience comes from intentional habits that sustain both performance and well-being. Through structured routines - morning workouts for energy, deep focused work sessions, and piano breaks for mental resets - he has developed a system that keeps him at his best. With Edge, he’s gained diverse experiences while building the adaptability and endurance needed to excel in high-stakes work.
How do you stay sharp and focused in such a demanding role?
“Thriving in Deals means staying focused and managing pressure effectively. My day starts with a workout to boost energy and clear my mind. During lunch, I reset with a piano session, which allows me to step away from intense work and return with renewed focus. I also use time-blocking and concentration blockers to protect deep work sessions. These small but deliberate habits help me stay productive while maintaining a strong sense of well-being.”
How has flexibility at PwC helped you build resilience?
“Flexibility at PwC has allowed me to create a work rhythm that supports both performance and well-being. Whether it’s structuring my mornings around exercise, blocking time for focused work, or taking midday breaks for mental resets, I’ve been able to design a routine that keeps me engaged and sharp. The ability to shape my schedule not only helps me stay productive but also ensures that I can sustain performance without burning out.”
What has been a defining moment in your career?
“Leading a complex telecom project where I built a critical financial model for a client was a turning point for me. The high-pressure environment required me to stay laser-focused and perform at my best. Applying the focus strategies I’ve developed with intentional mental resets—helped me manage the intensity of the project. That experience proved to me that resilience isn’t just about endurance; it’s about having the right strategies to sustain high performance over time.”
How has the Edge programme helped shape your career?
“The Edge programme has been key to both my professional growth and resilience. It gave me exposure to different areas of Deals, allowed me to refine my strengths, and helped me build a strong global network. More importantly, it taught me how to navigate high-pressure environments while maintaining mental well-being. PwC actively supports employees in developing both technical expertise and structured routines that keep us performing at a high level without compromising on well-being.”
What advice would you give to graduates or new joiners?

Luuk’s story showcases the lasting impact of PwC’s Edge programme. His international secondment in London has helped him sharpen his data analytics skills, expand his global network, and take on new challenges in one of the most vibrant markets for M&A.
What have been the highlights of your career at PwC so far?
"There have been many highlights, but one of the biggest was starting at PwC as a trainee and rotating through four different departments. I also completed a Master’s in Data Science and Business Analytics, which was a big achievement for me. But the most significant highlight was definitely my secondment to London. It allowed me to work on major projects and experience a new culture, both professionally and personally."
What motivated you to apply for an international secondment?
"I’ve always been curious about working abroad. My former coach at PwC introduced me to the idea of an international secondment, which triggered something in me. I started looking into the options I was drawn to London because of its reputation as a hub for M&A."
What were the key differences you noticed between working in the UK and the Netherlands?
"Professionally, the projects were bigger, more international, and more fast-paced. The UK teams work with tools like Power BI on almost every project, which is something at that time we didn’t use as much in the Netherlands. There’s also a difference in how deliverables are handled - clients in the UK expect drafts earlier, even if they aren’t finalised, which is quite different from the Dutch approach. Culturally, people in the UK are generally more polite, and after-work drinks can happen any day of the week, whereas in the Netherlands, we save that for Thursdays!"
How has the Edge programme helped prepare you for your international secondment?
"The Edge programme was essential in preparing me for this experience. Meeting colleagues from around the world at events like those in Madrid gave me connections across borders, even before I moved to London. We also touched on cultural differences during our Edge sessions, which helped me navigate the professional and personal challenges of moving to a new country."
What challenges did you face during your secondment, and how did you overcome them?
"One of the cultural challenges was realising that in London, people don’t automatically invite you to lunch or drinks after work. In the Netherlands, that’s something that happens naturally, but in London, you have to invite yourself! Once I realised that, it became easier to join in and feel more integrated."
What advice would you give to other graduates considering an international secondment?
"My advice is simple - do it! If you get the opportunity, take it. Be proactive, start preparing early, and make sure you have the support of key people like your Partner. Go in with an open mind and be eager to learn from everyone around you. The experience will not only grow your professional skills but also your network and personal development."
“My secondment to London was a game-changer - projects were bigger, more fast-paced and gave me more international exposure. Meeting international colleagues and exploring cultural differences at Edge events helped prepare me.”
What key skills or attributes made Luuk an ideal candidate for this secondment?
"Luuk was ideal for the secondment because of his strong technical skills and adaptability. He was always eager to embrace new opportunities and experiences, and his intrinsic motivation to succeed abroad made him a great fit. It’s not always easy to find people who are motivated to step out of their comfort zones, and Luuk certainly stood out in that regard."
How has Luuk’s secondment benefited his future career and PwC Netherlands?
"Luuk’s secondment has provided him with invaluable experience, which will undoubtedly benefit his future career. He gained international exposure, expanded his professional network, and brought back new ways of thinking and working. The knowledge he has shared since returning has also benefited our team by giving us a broader perspective on global best practices."
How has Luuk's performance impacted your team after his return?
"Luuk came back as a more seasoned professional. His international experience added depth to his skills, and his ability to bridge cultural and professional differences has been a great asset to the team."
Why would you recommend other Edge graduates pursue an international secondment?
"International secondments provide an unparalleled opportunity for professional and personal growth. They offer a chance to build a global network, explore new ways of working, and broaden your perspective. Graduates who go on secondment often come back more confident, resilient, and ready to tackle challenges in a much broader context."
What are the three advantages of running secondments?
"The three main advantages are: building a strong international network, providing graduates with a unique opportunity to grow personally and professionally, and fostering the exchange of best practices across territories, which improves overall team performance."
“International secondments foster long-term growth, enabling the exchange of best practices and building a global network.”
hat has your team gained from having Luuk on secondment?
"Luuk brought a fresh perspective to our team, grounded in his experiences from the Netherlands. Not only did he adapt to our way of working in the UK, but he also introduced valuable insights from his background. For instance, Luuk contributed his expertise in data analytics and model structuring, which added depth to our projects and expanded the range of approaches we considered. His straightforward Dutch communication style also fostered open and transparent discussions, enhancing both client interactions and internal teamwork."
How did Luuk integrate with the local team and work culture in the UK?
"Luuk integrated well into the team, both professionally and socially. Our projects are often shorter in duration, and he was able to contribute quickly and effectively. He also made efforts to engage socially, such as joining after-work drinks and navigating the cultural difference of inviting himself to social gatherings, which is more common in the UK. This proactive approach helped him build relationships within the team. His collaborative mindset and willingness to take on different roles made him a natural fit in our environment."
What key projects did Luuk contribute to during his secondment?
"Luuk worked on a wide variety of projects, from two-week engagements to larger eight-week projects. One standout moment was when he stepped in to lead client meetings while a director was on holiday. His ability to take the reins, maintain project momentum, and manage stakeholder relationships demonstrated his leadership skills and adaptability."
What qualities made Luuk particularly successful during his secondment?
"Luuk is technically very strong, and he didn’t need much upskilling when he arrived. He quickly integrated into the team and had the confidence to suggest different ways of working, which we appreciated. He also showed great gravitas when working with clients, and his ability to coach junior team members was a huge asset."
What are the three advantages of running secondments like Luuk’s?
"First, secondments foster a global mindset by exposing individuals to different ways of working and thinking beyond their home territory. Second, they help build stronger relationships, not only for the individual but also between the territories involved. And third, they encourage the sharing of best practices, which is fundamental to innovation and doing things better across PwC."
What advice would you give to other partners considering hosting secondees?
"My advice would be to keep an open mind and provide secondees with opportunities to integrate themselves into the team. Give them time to bed in, but also set clear goals and milestones so that both the individual and the team benefit from the experience. It’s important to keep communication open between the home and host territories, to ensure that everyone is aligned on expectations and outcomes."
“Secondments strengthen territorial collaboration, spark innovation, and unlock diverse ways of thinking across the PwC network.”

In New Zealand, I worked on various financial due diligence projects and had the opportunity to take the lead on some engagements. The chance to immerse myself in a different working environment and culture was a major highlight for me."
Can you describe a typical day in your life, and how did it differ between Japan and New Zealand?
"In Japan, my daily routine was more focused on work, with limited social activities during the week. In New Zealand, I made an effort to be more outgoing and engaged with my team outside of work. I joined a local football team and often went out for drinks with colleagues, which helped me integrate into the local culture."
What motivated you to apply for an international secondment, and why New Zealand in particular?
"My motivation came from a desire to improve my English skills and gain more confidence in cross-border projects. I specifically chose New Zealand because of its open-minded culture and diverse community, which I thought would make it easier for me to integrate and learn from others."
How has the secondment experience benefited your career moving forward?
"The secondment has been a huge boost to my career. It improved my communication skills, helped me build a global network, and taught me how to manage projects in a more independent and proactive way. I’ve returned to Japan with a broader perspective, which will help me handle future cross-border projects."
What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
"One of the biggest challenges was the language barrier, particularly during meetings with senior management. I often struggled to understand certain terms or nuances, but I didn’t hesitate to ask for clarification from my team. it taught me the importance of asking questions to ensure accuracy."
What advice would you give to other graduates considering an international secondment?
"My advice would be to take the opportunity without hesitation. But before going abroad, it’s important to perform well in your home territory. If you can excel at home, you will be able to contribute even more in the host country. And always keep an open mind—embrace the differences, and don’t be afraid to ask questions."
“Going to New Zealand was a true exchange - I shared Japanese traditions, adapted to a new work culture, and built connections I’ll carry for life.”
What key skills or attributes made Hiroyuki an ideal candidate for this secondment?
"Hiroyuki has always stood out as a top performer. His combination of strong digital and business skills, excellent communication, and a proactive attitude made him the perfect candidate. We knew he would thrive in an international setting because of his adaptability and determination."
How has this secondment benefited Hiroyuki’s future career and PwC Japan?
"One of the key benefits for Hiroyuki is the significant improvement in his English language skills, which will open doors to more international client engagements. Beyond that, he’s now developed a strong understanding of PwC’s global network and culture, which is crucial as he moves towards becoming a future leader in our Transaction Services team. His experience will also help us maintain global connectivity, especially as Japan’s market continues to shrink."
What has PwC Japan gained as a result of Hiroyuki’s secondment?
"While Hiroyuki was away, he stayed connected to the team here, even participating in recruitment efforts and maintaining communication with his junior colleagues. His experience has shown the team the importance of global perspectives, and his success story has inspired others within the firm to consider secondment opportunities. We expect him to bring a fresh approach to our projects and integrate global best practices into our operations. Why would you recommend other Edge graduates pursue an international secondment?
"An international secondment is a chance to gain perspectives that are nearly impossible to achieve at home. For Hiroyuki, immersing himself in New Zealand's work culture, improving his English, and staying connected with his Japan team have all been invaluable. Experiences like these challenge graduates to adapt, communicate across cultures, and return with fresh insights that benefit not only themselves but also their home teams."
What advice would you give to other partners considering international secondments for their graduates?
"View secondments as a long-term investment. Losing a high performer for a year can feel like a short-term pain, but the skills and experience they bring back are invaluable. Ensure that the candidate is well-suited for the role and that they stay connected with their home team. The benefits are substantial for both the individual and the firm."
What are the three main advantages of running secondments like Hiroyuki’s?
"First, secondments provide a unique opportunity for global networking, which is crucial in today’s interconnected business world. Second, they offer a chance to develop language and cultural skills that are necessary for cross-border projects. Third, they expose individuals to new ways of working, fostering innovation and bringing fresh ideas back to the home territory."
“While it’s a short-term loss of a high performer, the skills, global perspective, and innovation he’s brought back are an invaluable long-term gain for both him and our team.”
What did New Zealand or your team gain from having Hiroyuki on secondment?
"Hiroyuki brought a fresh perspective and impressive data analytics skills from Japan, which were less developed within our New Zealand team. His ability to handle complex, large datasets with remarkable speed set a new benchmark for efficiency, and he quickly became a key contributor on data-heavy projects. As he gained confidence in English, he expanded his role to include report writing, adding clarity to complex data insights. Before leaving, he went a step further by training junior team members, ensuring that his impact would be felt long after his return to Japan. Hiroyuki’s secondment not only strengthened our technical capabilities but also inspired a collaborative, knowledge-sharing culture within the team."
How did Hiroyuki integrate with the local team and culture in New Zealand?
"Hiroyuki embraced New Zealand’s culture while staying true to his Japanese roots. Coming from a work environment where he wore a suit daily, he surprised the team by dressing in a three-piece suit most days. To show solidarity and make him feel more at home, the team created ‘Suit Wednesdays,’ where everyone dressed up with him. Beyond attire, Hiro immersed himself in the team, taking them to events like Japan Day. His integration was a genuine two-way cultural exchange, and he left a lasting impression on everyone."
What did the team give back to Hiroyuki during his secondment?
"Our team helped Hiro with day-to-day English conversations and integrated him into our social circles, which built his confidence in both formal and informal settings. The transformation was incredible—he went from being reserved at the start to confidently engaging with everyone at his own farewell drinks, with people from across the team and even inviting his football club to celebrate."
Why do you think Hiroyuki’s secondment was such a success?
"Hiro was the perfect candidate because he embraced every aspect of the experience. He didn’t just bring his technical skills; he also brought an openness to learning and adapting to a different culture. Not every second takes full advantage of the opportunity, but Hiro made sure to."

What have been the highlights of your career at PwC so far?
"Joining the Edge programme in Dublin was the perfect transition from university to the professional world. I worked on landmark transactions in Ireland, and the collaborative atmosphere helped me grow quickly. Another highlight was the Edge onboarding event in El Escorial in Spain, where I met so many talented people from different cultures. And, of course, my secondment to Luxembourg stands out - it pushed me in ways I hadn’t imagined, both professionally and personally."
Can you describe a typical day in your life, and how did it differ between Dublin and Luxembourg?
"Dublin is fast-paced, and it’s all about quick meetings and immediate action. Luxembourg, on the other hand, is more structured—everything is planned in advance, and the work culture is slightly more formal. This change pushed me to become more organised and to approach my work with a longer-term mindset. Socially, I had to adapt as well. Luxembourg is smaller, but I made the effort to integrate into the local team and take part in social events. I even had the chance to play golf with a client, which strengthened our working relationship.
What motivated you to apply for an international secondment?
"Professionally, I wanted to challenge myself after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. I felt like a change would help me grow faster. Personally, I’ve always loved travelling, and having studied Spanish and lived in Spain, I knew I could handle the challenge of moving to a new country. Luxembourg was particularly appealing because of its role as a financial hub, which offered me the chance to work on complex international transactions."

Overall, I feel much more capable and ready to take on larger, more complex projects."
What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
"The first few weeks in Luxembourg were tough—there was a language barrier, and I had to prove myself to my new team. But I stayed patient and took on smaller tasks to show my skills. Eventually, I was given more responsibility, and by the end, I was leading major client meetings. Socially, I also made an effort to integrate by joining events and even went on a trip with colleagues to the Algarve.
What advice would you give to other graduates considering an international secondment?
"Take the leap and dive in! It’s scary at first, especially if you’re moving to a place where you don’t know anyone, but it’s worth it. Plan ahead, make the most of your time there, and don’t be afraid to attend social events or explore on your own. You’ll come out of the experience with new skills, a broader network, and a new perspective on life and work."

"Darragh is a very committed and involved person, which made the secondment easy for us. He participated in all team activities, both professional and social, which helped him integrate quickly. "Darragh mainly worked on a sell-side mandate involving a Luxembourg-based company with shareholders from the UK and Belgium. He also participated in a few client pitches, which further showcased his professionalism and technical capabilities."
How has Darragh's performance compared to that of a local employee?

His ability to navigate cultural differences and build rapport with the clients made him stand out."
What client or team feedback have you received about Darragh?
"The client was very impressed with Darragh’s professionalism and technical expertise. In fact, the client even invited him to play golf with them, which is a testament to how well he was able to build personal relationships.. He really became a part of our Luxembourg team."
What are the three main advantages of running secondments like Darragh’s?
"First, secondments create stronger relationships between offices, fostering collaboration. Second, they provide knowledge exchange, which helps improve practices on both sides. Third, secondees like Darragh bring in fresh perspectives and new skills, which enhances the overall performance of the team."

What have been the highlights of your career at PwC so far?
"It’s incredibly hard to identify specific highlights when there have been so many great opportunities over the last few years. But if I were to name a few, the first would be representing Deal Strategy at a major conference in 2022. Presenting to an auditorium of partners and directors from across the African continent was both intimidating and a huge privilege. Another highlight has been participating in the onbaording and graduation events in Sapin. Reflecting on those experiences, I realize how much I learned and the invaluable connections I made throughout my Edge and PwC journey."
What factors do you think most helped you accelerate your career to Senior Manager?
"Undoubtedly, the people around me. I have been incredibly fortunate to have leaders who guided my development and supported my career progression. From my early days as an associate to my current role as Senior Manager, the continuous support and opportunities provided by my managers and partners have been crucial. Being part of a small, developing team also allowed me to step up and take on responsibilities beyond my role, accelerating my growth."
How has the Edge programme supported your development?
"Joining Deals as a graduate is unique in South Africa, as most hires are at the Senior Associate or Manager level. Starting from the bottom allowed me to develop within the Deals context from day one. The Edge programme provided a community of graduates, creating a sense of belonging and support. The rotation into M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions) was particularly beneficial, giving me a broader perspective on Deals and enhancing my skills as an advisor. Edge truly fast-tracks your development by providing a comprehensive Deals acumen."
Can you tell us about a defining moment in your career?
"A defining moment was working with one of South Africa's big banks on their ESG commercialisation strategy. This non-deal engagement involved developing long-term strategic decisions and quantifying the size of potential opportunities in the financial services space. It was fascinating to see how ESG is driving strategic decision-making and to contribute to such a significant project."
Describe a day in the life of Andrew.
"My day starts early, typically between 4:30 and 5:00 AM with a run, gym, or boxing session. Exercising before work makes me significantly more productive. By 8:00 AM, I’m online and prioritizing time-sensitive and high-priority tasks. The day can vary greatly depending on project stages and client needs, often ending between 4:30 and 6:00 PM. The dynamic nature of working in Deals makes each day exciting and filled with new challenges"
What advice would you offer to new graduates wanting to progress in their careers at PwC?
"My advice to new graduates is to focus on your attitude. Everyone on the Edge programme is smart and qualified, but what sets you apart is how you show up. Commitment and loyalty to the firm are also crucial. PwC rewards those who demonstrate the right attitude and dedication. Don’t be impatient; build your Deals acumen, make as many connections as possible, and always go above and beyond. Your career acceleration is in your hands, and with the right mindset, PwC is the best place to grow."

His experience will also help us maintain global connectivity, especially as Japan’s market continues to shrink."

Second, they offer a chance to develop language and cultural skills that are necessary for cross-border projects. Third, they expose individuals to new ways of working, fostering innovation and bringing fresh ideas back to the home territory."

Socially, I also made an effort to integrate by joining events and even went on a trip with colleagues to the Algarve.

His straightforward Dutch communication style also fostered open and transparent discussions, enhancing both client interactions and internal teamwork."

It’s important to keep communication open between the home and host territories, to ensure that everyone is aligned on expectations and outcomes."
“Secondments strengthen territorial collaboration, spark innovation, and unlock diverse ways of thinking across the PwC network.”

As he gained confidence in English, he expanded his role to include report writing, adding clarity to complex data insights. Hiroyuki’s secondment not only strengthened our technical capabilities but also inspired a collaborative, knowledge-sharing culture within the team."

How has the secondment experience benefited your career moving forward?
"My secondment has given me the confidence to lead, especially in high-pressure situations. I’ve also gained a much better understanding of cross-border transactions and how to work effectively with international teams. The exposure to new technologies, like building interactive dashboards in Power BI, has also expanded my skill set.
