What have been the highlights of your career at PwC so far?

"One of the highlights of my career has been moving to Australia on a secondment. It's allowed me to immerse myself in a different culture and work environment, broadening my professional perspective. I've also embraced the local lifestyle, from enjoying the vibrant coffee culture to learning how to surf at the iconic Bondi Beach. These experiences have deeply enriched my life."

How has the Edge programme supported your development?

"The Edge programme provided the structure and support needed to navigate my secondment. It enabled me to work on diverse projects and connect with colleagues from around the world, enriching my professional skill set and expanding my network. Participating in various training sessions and events, like the graduation week in Macau, was pivotal in my development, helping me to build a global perspective and a strong professional network."

What motivated you to apply for an international secondment?

"I have always been drawn to the idea of living abroad and embracing the expat lifestyle. After spending six months working in London, I craved a longer, more adventurous journey. An international secondment provides countless benefits, from broadening skills to immersing in new cultures and reshaping daily routines. Choosing to move to Sydney, Australia, was a bold decision, but it has proven to be an immensely fulfilling experience."

How do you think this secondment experience will influence your career moving forward?

"In Australia, I have become exposed to unique cross-border projects. I have applied my skills in new sectors and gained knowledge in areas different from the typical French market. This international experience will help me leverage unique perspectives on cross-border collaborations moving forward. The ability to adapt quickly to different teams and working styles will be a significant asset in my career."

Can you tell us about a defining moment in your career?

"One defining moment was working on a global engagement with a French client looking to do business in Australia. This allowed me to share insights and cultural reflections with my team, leveraging my experience from PwC France which was key in the transaction."

What new skills or perspectives have you gained during your secondment that you will bring back to your home territory?

"In Australia, I have learned to approach problems with a fresh perspective, often incorporating innovative solutions. Working with the Australian team has broadened my understanding of different market dynamics and client expectations. This has equipped me with new strategies and techniques that I can apply back in France."

What advice would you offer to new graduates wanting to progress in their careers at PwC?

"Take advantage of international opportunities and be proactive in seeking out new challenges. Building a global perspective and embracing diverse experiences will greatly enhance your career. It's also an amazing opportunity to discover life in a new country! Make sure to speak to as many people as you can to understand the culture".

Phoebe Groves: Leading with excellence at PwC UK

Phoebe’s journey with PwC’s Edge programme showcases the opportunities for professional growth, leadership, and impactful work. Her story highlights the values that drive PwC's commitment to fostering a supportive and dynamic work environment.

What have been the highlights of your career at PwC so far?

"The highlights for me have been the incredible opportunities to learn and grow as a Corporate Finance advisor within the consumer and leisure sector. I’ve been fortunate to have had a whole host of brilliant clients who I have loved working alongside – it’s hard to beat the feeling of completing a transaction which you genuinely believe delivers the best result possible for each of the stakeholders. Aside from being a part of many fantastic deals, one standout moment recently was when we hosted a breakfast event for the competitive socialising industry. I had the privilege of leading a panel discussion with industry leaders, in a room full of exciting businesses in the space.”

What factors do you think most helped you accelerate your career to Associate Director?

"The trust and confidence my team placed in me, coupled with the early opportunities to take on significant responsibilities, were pivotal in accelerating my career. Being proactive and seeking out challenges has always been important for me to push myself and lean into each and every opportunity. Importantly, I think doing something I love, in a sector I am both personally and professionally interested in, has meant that I’ve constantly seeking ways to step up and do more. The continuous mentorship and support from my team, especially the Partners I work with, have also been instrumental in my development."

How has the Edge programme supported your development?

"The Edge programme expanded my global network from day one, connecting me with valuable relationships across the EMEA region. These connections are so beneficial given the number of cross-border transactions we do, providing insights and access to expertise from different territories. The structured support, comprehensive training, and guidance offered through the Edge programme have also supported my development. One memorable experience was attending the Edge programme event in Madrid, which allowed me to forge strong bonds with my peers and senior colleagues across different regions."

Can you tell us about a defining moment in your career?

"A defining moment was working intensely with a client as the day-to-day lead for the sale of a stake in an Indian street food casual dining business. It was a brilliant deal with a fantastic business, delivered during turbulent times in the Deals market and wider economy. This experience deepened my love for the leisure sector and honed my skills in handling complex deals.”

What unique challenges and opportunities have you encountered, and what advice do you have for women aspiring to reach your position?

"In a post-COVID world, adapting to hybrid work environments and ensuring face-to-face interactions for both deeper relationship-building, and coaching opportunities, has been incredibly important. I love going into the office and I would always encourage others to do the same to get the best learning experiences, and grow connections more deeply.

I have benefited from trust and support from Partners, colleagues and mentors along the way, which has been hugely beneficial for me. My advice to women entering the industry is to build a strong support network, seek out mentors, and never shy away from challenges. Embrace every opportunity to prove your capabilities and let your work speak for itself.“
