There are several ways my STEM major relates directly to my current work and has proved advantageous as I had already developed relevant skills and experience that I could apply immediately to my role.
In Deals, we work in project teams with tight deadlines. I was used to working like this at college and had already developed some of my project management skills such as planning, communication, time management and leadership.
I’d already learned several programming codes, and this made it easier for me to understand the data tools I work with now. Being able to use a tech-enabled approach, develop compelling arguments and present data in a meaningful, impactful and accessible way is key in Deals.
It’s always daunting starting a new career but I soon realised that I already had lots of relevant skills and that really boosted my confidence.
Being a STEM graduate I have developed previous knowledge and experience which I’m finding relevant to my current work. For example, during my rotation, I took part in projects in the Energy sector which was an area I had specialised in previously. It was easy for me to understand how this industry works and what work is done in various departments. As a result, I’m able to relate to clients in this sector, in a way that others who don’t have this insight can’t. I find I am the ‘go to’ person when others have queries relating to this sector and that gives me an edge!
