Wales and Malta tie the knot

  • January 2024

PwC Malta is one of the first businesses to endorse The Wales Malta Initiative, which has been exclusively selected by Wales Week Worldwide to be the representative for 'Wales Week Malta' going forward.

2024 will see the inaugural Wales Week Malta, to be held annually around the time of St. David's Day, Wales’ national day; with a raft of events and activities covering business, culture, education and sports, over a one-week period around March 1st.

The Wales Malta Initiative (WMI) was founded by Dr. Alan Sandry at the University of Swansea and Edwin Ward, Chair of WX2 Group in Malta; the WMI company is co-chaired by former HSBC Continental Europe Deputy CEO Tony Mahoney, and Reuben Mifsud, CEO of Welsh-based software company Tasika.

WMI's manager is Maltese and Welsh national Lisa James, who has strong ties with both the Maltese diaspora in Wales where she is based, and the emerging new Maltese entrepreneurs, following a top-level professional career in the UK.

WMI's mission is to foster ties between Malta and Wales around internationalisation, digital, green tech, life sciences, knowledge transfer, culture and media. In addition to PwC Malta, the Initiative has attracted several sponsors and partners including Malta Enterprise, Malta Life Sciences, Malta Chamber of Commerce, Education Malta, Chamber of SMEs, Melita, Farsons, Malta Innovation Forum, Penderyn, Tasika, St. Julian's Maritime Finance, WX2 Advertising & PR, and the British High Commission, amongst others.

Bilateral visits, seminars and other activities are ongoing, with a Welsh delegation attending Malta Life Sciences' upcoming Lifesaver Conference on November 22. Malta Life Sciences Chair Ing. Joseph Sammut has recently completed a visit to Welsh universities and various activities are being planned by the stakeholders.

Wales week Malta

"We are excited to partner with and support both The Wales Malta Initiative as well as the very first Wales Week Malta event with a specific commitment to celebrate diverse cultures and identify ways of collaboration. This sponsorship is a true reflection of PwC Malta’s core values as it puts people and well-being at the forefront, while pushing for stronger global connections."

David Valenzia,PwC Malta’s Territory Senior Partner.

"Having David Valenzia and the PwC Malta expertise backed team to help WMI in the early days is a great comfort to us. It serves as a confirmation that we have started a sustainable platform that important stakeholders see mileage in. We are working hard to build on key meetings we've had over the last couple of years and to delivering a Wales Week Malta 2024 to remember, and from which we can build for successive years."

Tony Mahoney,WMI co-Chair
