KUALA LUMPUR, 12 March 2018 – PwC Malaysia has been appointed by eight-time World Squash Champion Datuk Nicol David as the strategic advisor to establish the Nicol David Foundation. A first of its kind in Malaysia, the Foundation aims to promote sports as a vehicle to empower disadvantaged children. It also seeks to increase the participation of children in sports.
A signing ceremony was held today, to appoint PwC Malaysia to carry out the pro-bono engagement. As a strategic advisor, PwC Malaysia will work with Datuk Nicol David over a period of two years to formulate the structure of the Foundation.
The initial scope of work will consist of defining the vision, mission, objectives and programmes offered by the Foundation. PwC Malaysia will set up the governance structure and operating model, provide advice on the tax structure, and measure the impact of the Foundation’s activities.
Sridharan (Sri) Nair, PwC Malaysia Managing Partner, said:
“We are very excited to work with Datuk Nicol David to set up this Foundation to benefit deserving young Malaysians. Datuk Nicol is a sports icon for our times, and an inspiring role model to many young Malaysians.
This is a great opportunity to use our advisory capabilities to work with Datuk Nicol and create value to our community, in line with our PwC purpose which is ‘To build trust in society and solve important problems’.
As part of our #PwCWellbeing programme, we are on a journey to promote health and wellbeing. We are looking forward to working closely with Datuk Nicol to reach children who don’t have ready access to sports facilities, and provide them an avenue to lead healthy lifestyles, and to develop their confidence through this Foundation.”
Datuk Nicol David said:
“It has always been my dream to give back what I have received through squash. I am happy to make this Nicol David Foundation a reality, with advisory from PwC.
The Nicol David Foundation aims to create, fund and support programmes to improve the lives of disadvantaged children by providing them with the knowledge and confidence to choose and determine their life’s path.
Using sports to empower these children, it will teach them discipline and routine, a commitment to a cause and an aspiration to better themselves.
PwC met the criteria of a partner that I wanted to collaborate with to bring to life this Foundation: they shared the same vision; they believed in the mission; and they committed long term to the cause.
I have no doubt that this strategic collaboration with PwC will be the start of great things to come and I look forward to the Nicol David Foundation coming to fruition in 2019.”
At the signing ceremony today, Sri Nair signed the letter of engagement on behalf of PwC Malaysia. Also present at the event were representatives from PwC Malaysia; Consulting Leader Andrew Chan, Tax Leader Jagdev Singh, Diversity Leader Chin Suit Fang, and Executive Director Paul Francis.
Datuk Nicol David also did a Q&A session as part of PwC’s International Women’s Day celebration for its employees. She shared about her journey as a sports icon, her role as a National Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and what it means to be a role model for the younger generation. She also took time out to meet the team who would be working on the engagement.
