KUCHING, SARAWAK, 24 June 2019 – PwC Malaysia today opened the doors to their new office in Kuching, Sarawak, expanding the firm’s presence in East Malaysia, and bringing the total number of PwC offices in Malaysia to seven.
The launch ceremony held this morning was officiated by The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, the Chief Minister of Sarawak.
Sridharan (Sri) Nair, PwC Malaysia Managing Partner said:
“Having worked with clients in Sarawak over the past few years, it became increasingly clear to us that there is a growing demand for professional services that a multi-disciplinary firm like PwC can offer. This is against the backdrop of a changing regulatory landscape and the rapid rise of technology, which impact both the public and private sectors, adding to the uncertainty of an already complex business environment.
We have been helping our clients in the State navigate these challenges, and working closely with them to identify and seize the opportunities that come with doing business in the digital age. But we want to do more. We believe the time is ripe for us to establish a physical presence in Sarawak, which would allow for a team to be permanently ‘on the ground’ to support the State’s goals, and to meet the demands of Sarawak’s corporate sector.”
PwC Malaysia’s Kuching office has made its home in Wisma STA, a strategic and accessible location in Kuching City. PwC’s wide range of services offered are tailored to address the needs of various functions within an organisation, from implementing effective tax strategies to reshaping workplace culture in response to current trends.
Sri continued:
“Sarawak is embarking on an exciting transformation journey. As the State shifts its efforts in developing their digital economy into high gear, we believe we can play a role in supporting this vision. Being part of a global network means we can tap into the expertise of our counterparts across the world, allowing us to provide our clients with richer insights on global best practices.
Together with our experience working with the public sector and with businesses both corporate and entrepreneurial, we believe these capabilities will serve us well in delivering greater value to Sarawak and its people.”
At the launch ceremony held in Wisma STA, the Chief Minister of Sarawak The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari delivered the keynote address. He shared his vision for Sarawakians to achieve success in integrating digital into their business and everyday lives, and for the State to produce technology-savvy entrepreneurs. He also highlighted the need to reduce the disparity gap between Sarawak’s urban and rural areas.
In his speech, the Chief Minister said:
“... I’m pleased to see that PwC Malaysia has established a physical presence here. From my interactions with them on key issues ranging from technology and digital, to investment strategy and economics and policy, I’ve not only found their team’s advice to be sound and insightful. I’ve also learned that they are attuned to Sarawak’s needs.”
The Chief Minister also emphasised the need for close collaboration between the State Government and the private sector, in order to leapfrog Sarawak into highly-developed status in the coming years.
The event was attended by State Government officials and corporate leaders. Following the official launch was a presentation on ‘The future of work’ by the Chief Executive Officer of PwC South East Asia Consulting Sundara Raj.
