Here at PwC, everyone has a coach to guide them throughout their journey and answer any doubts that they may have along the way. Shierly, a Manager from our Risk and Regulatory Consulting team, shares how she is fortunate to have more than one career coach who cared for her personal wellbeing and helped her advance her professional development to the next level.
“Being a consultant, my role primarily involves listening to my clients' business problems and helping to solve them. Sometimes, I do face roadblocks at work and when I do, I would seek advice from my coaches who would take time off their busy schedule to listen and provide thoughtful insights on how I can better serve my clients, pursue my career ambitions and grow personally.
I was fortunate to have two coaches from my team where both of them played integral roles in my growth journey - personally and professionally. Catherine, our Director, is someone that I could always confide in on a daily basis and serve as a great role-model to me. At the same time, Irene, our Partner, provides me with strategic and visionary advice to help me achieve my long-term goals.
One of my most unforgettable moments with them was the day both of them accompanied me to the hospital when I had a bad case of food poisoning and was vomiting non-stop. They even got me flowers, gifts and yong tau foo when they visited me!
I am very thankful to my coaches for supporting me above and beyond what I had expected.
It is afterall, not often that a workplace would provide this kind of support, and I appreciate PwC's strong coaching and people culture for this.
As I reflect on my PwC journey, my advice to undergraduates who don’t yet know what they want to pursue for their career, would be that it is okay to not know what you want. Life will pull you in different directions, but as long as you keep moving forward you will eventually find your way.”
