Shilp graduated with an Engineering degree and came across an opportunity to begin his career in PwC Singapore’s General Assurance (GA) practice. With training and support provided to help him transit into the audit role despite his non-accounting background, Shilp knew that he had to seize the opportunity.
“Coming from a non-accounting background, I needed to get a grasp on accounting principles and quickly apply what I learned to my day-to-day work. With the firm’s emphasis on providing a conducive learning culture across all levels and ages, I experienced an accelerated learning journey to become an effective, full-fledged auditor.
As I took on the Singapore CA Qualification (SCAQ) exams for non-accounting graduates, my team members, managers and our Partners gave me valuable advice and were extremely supportive as I studied for the exams. Beyond that, my manager also became a close and personal friend of mine. We would go for dinners and talk about almost anything - from the struggles of being away from home to going through the accounting peak period. Occasionally, as a form of stress relief, my colleagues and I would pull off harmless pranks on each other such as switching our wireless mouse connectors in the laptops to see how the other person would react. It is moments like these that make peak periods enjoyable!
Being an avid sports fan, I also joined PwC’s clubs and committees (tennis, cricket and softball team) to play competitively and leisurely. This provided an opportunity for me to expand my social network beyond audit.
For all the friendships made and the harmless pranks pulled, I am thankful for the fond memories because of my decision to pursue a career that is unrelated to my major.
To students who are considering a profession in audit – don’t be afraid to reimagine the possible! Keep an open mind and be willing to learn. After all, never stop learning because life never stops teaching.
