Here at PwC, everyone is presented with avenues to ideate and implement change. Andrew Khan, Assistant Manager in PwC Singapore’s Venture Hub team shares how being in PwC Singapore’s Junior Board gave him a platform to drive change and meet people beyond his department.
“When I was presented the opportunity to join the firm’s Junior Board, I was hesitant at first as I wasn’t sure if I should take on additional responsibilities. Knowing the Junior Board’s role - a bridge between the employees and the firm's leadership, empowered to ideate and implement change to make a difference for all PwC employees - I decided to give it a try after a bit of persuasion.
My role in the Junior Board focuses on enhancing the wellbeing of our people through organising events like movie nights, fitness classes and nutritional talks. However, planning the activities were not always straightforward as I had to juggle work, Junior Board and personal commitments at the same time.
Fortunately, it wasn’t all work and no play. When we visited Phnom Penh for the Junior Board strategy trip, some of us tried fried insects for the first time together. We tasted a variety like tarantulas, crickets and ants and I have to say, my personal favourite was the crickets - they tasted like fried baby octopus.
Overall, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the experience that I decided to continue to serve a second term.
I’m glad to say that across these two terms, I have formed deep friendships with folks beyond my department, friends whom we can seek advice from when we encounter work challenges.
I’d also like to thank my colleagues from the Venture Hub team who have been very supportive of my commitment to the Junior Board and the initiatives we organised.
My advice to those who are still studying would be to enjoy your time in university and prepare yourself for the transition to working life. You should really hone your soft skills like planning, time management and resourcefulness while in university and you will find them handy in the future!”
