People of PwC: Malcolm

For Malcolm, joining PwC as an Advisory associate marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter. After graduating from SIT with an accountancy degree, Malcolm stepped into his full-time role in January 2024, already familiar with the firm through two internships in the Financial Services Assurance and Deals teams.

“It was the emphasis on growth and support I felt from my colleagues that convinced me this was the right place to kickstart my career.”

Reflecting on his decision to join the firm full-time, Malcolm highlights the firm’s strong coaching culture and focus on professional development. “It was the emphasis on growth and support I felt from my colleagues that convinced me this was the right place to kickstart my career,” he shares.

Malcolm’s academic experience laid a solid theoretical foundation, but his time at PwC has allowed him to build on that by applying his knowledge to real-world situations. “What I learnt in university gave me the basics, but here at PwC, I’ve been able to put it into practice and gain new skills that are shaping me into a more well-rounded professional,” Malcolm says.

One memorable project early in his career involved presenting key activities from a project plan, requiring alignment across different teams. Initially unsure, Malcolm turned to his manager for guidance, who, despite a busy schedule, walked him through the process. “The insights I received not only improved my presentation but also taught me how to break down complex problems,” Malcolm explains.

The project also gave Malcolm a deeper understanding of the importance of teamwork. He described the journey as incredible; witnessing how teams from various functions aligned their efforts, ensuring that the entire operation, from securing inventory to planning future sales, moved smoothly. “It reinforced that no department could operate in isolation – teamwork and clear communication were essential to making the merger a success,” he says. For Malcolm, these learning moments at PwC continue to shape his professional journey.

Malcolm also shared some advice for students preparing for their first internships or full-time roles. “Don’t be afraid to engage with recruiters and ask questions. If you know someone at the company you are interested in, reach out for a firsthand look at the culture – it can make a significant difference in your decision-making,” he advises.
