Being actively involved in volunteering, Fiyonne particularly valued the relational aspect of befriending our beneficiaries. The Tax Administrator shares more about her takeaways from giving back, and desire to rally her colleagues to join her in making a difference.
The joy on the beneficiaries’ faces is truly inspiring and motivates me to volunteer. It’s also an opportunity for me to give back to the community while learning new skills and growing personally.
My commitment to volunteering is driven by a desire to learn, grow, and connect with others. Through volunteering, I’ve had the opportunity to try new things, like painting houses, installing bikes, and packing food for the underprivileged – experiences I never imagined myself having. Working alongside teams taught me the value of collaboration, and many of my fellow volunteering teammates even became close friends. Most importantly, hearing the personal life stories of the beneficiaries gave me a deeper understanding of their struggles and resilience, which continues to inspire my commitment to giving back.
To prepare for the volunteer activities, I spent time researching the basics of the tasks involved, such as painting techniques and tools required. This helped me better understand the purpose behind the activities and how to carry them out effectively. I also try to reach out to the organisers to get a clear idea of the schedule, the specific tasks planned for the day, and any other requirements.
One thing that really surprised me when I volunteered for Care in Action, our firm’s annual community project, was hearing a beneficiary share her story about caring for her son with a disability, who is already in his 30s. It gave me a deeper appreciation for her strength and resilience, especially after learning that their story was even featured in an online documentary. It reminded me how challenging life can be for some, yet how inspiring their perseverance is.
Through my volunteer work, I've developed and enhanced several skills. I improved my painting techniques and learned how to pack food in a more organised and efficient manner. One of the most rewarding experiences was building bikes to be donated to beneficiaries, alongside leaders and teammates from other departments. It wasn’t just about assembling parts; it was about coming together, sharing ideas, and building meaningful connections in a way we rarely get to in our daily work.
I am committed to continuing my volunteering journey, both within PwC and beyond. Volunteering has shown me the power of small actions to create meaningful impact, and I’m determined to do more whenever I can. Beyond my own participation, I hope to inspire others to join this journey. By sharing my experiences and the joy it brings, I aim to motivate and encourage those around me to get involved. I’ll take the initiative to invite friends, colleagues, and even new connections to step forward, because together, we can make an even greater impact.
