Being new to Singapore, volunteering was a perfect way for Abhishek Saini, an Associate with our Network Information Security team, to make new friends and learn more about his new home here in Singapore.
I started volunteering when I was new to Singapore and the weekly hiking sessions with Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Singapore allowed me to explore the nature in Singapore and make friends with other volunteers. It has presented me with the opportunity to improve my health and wellbeing as I exercise regularly with them. I have also participated in the Art Challenge sessions, and painting has helped to open up my creative side.

To prepare for the hikes, I usually check the weather and decide what items to carry to the location. I also check the travel time required as the hiking locations vary each week and plan the trip beforehand.

I have noticed that the ambassadors are very consistent. They work during the weekdays and participate in two or more physical activities like dancing, dragon boat, hiking or bowling every week. They are also very strong and can easily carry heavy backpacks while hiking for over 10 kilometres. During Art classes, I’m often surprised by their creative and colourful paintings.

I plan to continue signing up for the regular hiking sessions. I’m always on a lookout for new opportunities to volunteer.
