As urbanisation accelerates, transportation systems face increasing pressure, leading to environmental issues such as air pollution and reduced economic productivity. Building sustainable, efficient, and equitable mobility solutions is crucial for creating cities that are not only livable but also in line with global climate objectives.
The Sustainable Mobility Readiness Index (SMRI) is a comprehensive tool that evaluates the readiness of metropolitan areas to embrace sustainable mobility solutions. By analysing key factors such as infrastructure, policy frameworks, innovation, and environmental impact across 26 global cities, the SMRI delivers actionable, data-driven insights.
The SMRI was created to address the need for a clear measure of success in sustainable mobility, offering a comprehensive assessment of cities’ ability to adopt and sustain eco-friendly, efficient, and resilient mobility systems. With 68 indicators spanning six urban mobility dimensions—transport supply, demand, innovation, policies, finance, and environment & energy—the index provides a holistic view of how cities are progressing toward sustainable mobility.
Covering cities across five continents, the SMRI highlights strengths and areas for improvement, empowering policymakers, businesses and communities to make informed, impactful decisions. What sets the SMRI apart is its focus on the entire metropolitan area—not just city centers—assessing both passenger and logistics sustainability to provide a complete picture of urban mobility readiness.
