Bisnis Indonesia - Kota Batam kaji moda LRT

26 April 2023

Batam - Batam Indonesia Free Zone Authority (BP Batam) is studying to utilise a light rail transit (LRT) to anticipate future traffic jams in the region.

The designing and the development are planned to be carried out after the construction of the road and the port in Batu Ampar Port are completed.

BP Batam Head Muhammad Rudi said that the purpose of the LRT development plan was to accommodate the economic growth and the increasing Batam citizens.

“After the road and the port are completed, I want to prepare a mass transportation in the form of an LRT in Batam City,” he said on Tuesday (25/4).

He added that the LRT was BP Batam’s effort to reduce traffic jams in Batam City in Riau Islands.

“Even though the road has five lanes, but if it is not complemented by mass transportation, traffic jams will occur in the next several years,” he said.

Meanwhile, BP Batam Promotion and Protocol Public Relations Bureau Head Ariastuty Sirait revealed that the project has entered the document preparation process or the project planning stage.

He added that the process was set to be completed in May 2023. After it is completed, the project will enter the tender document preparation stage that will take around 3 months.

“So, the tender is set [to be held] at the end of 2023,” he stated.

In Bisnis’ records, the Batam LRT project has been announced since BP Batam was still led by Lukita Dunarsyah Tuwo in 2017.

At the time, BP Batam prepared the LRT route with 2 corridors. The first corridor goes passes through 19 stations from Tanjuguncang to Batam Centre. At the time, the route construction budget was estimated to reach Rp3.3 trillion.

The second corridor will have 25 stations from Hang Nadim Airport to Batu Ampar.

The budget for the second corridor is forecasted to reach Rp3.7 trillion. Investors from Malaysia are said to be interested in the second corridor.

“Business players are interested in the railway sector, such as the airport LRT. However, we are also open to develop other sectors,” BP Batam Promotion and Public Relations Director Dendi Gustinandar said in the middle of 2019.
