National road stability reaches 94.2%

Jakarta, ID – The Public Works and Housing (PUPR) ministry revealed that, out of the total length of non-toll national roads that reaches 47,603.4 kilometres (km) in Indonesia, its stability reaches 94.2%.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimulujono revealed that national road stability in Indonesia reached 94.2% to support the Eid homecoming period this year.

“Our [non-toll] national roads reach 47,603 km with a stability of 94.2%,” Basuki said at a work meeting on the 2024 Eid homecoming preparation with House of Representatives (DPR) Commission V in Jakarta on Tuesday (2/4/2024).

Basuki added that national road segments in Java ready for use spanned 6,500 km with a stability of 97.23%.

The PUPR Ministry has undertaken national road repairs, which encompass addressing segments of the national road after flooding in Demak, Karanganyar District, from February to March 2024, covering a distance of 1.8 km. These segments include the four lanes of the Semarang-Demak road, along with its road markings and medians.

The PUPR Ministry has successfully reopened and cleared the Sukabumi-Bogor national road, which was previously closed due to a landslide. As a result, the national road is now accessible for vehicles as usual.

Meanwhile, in Bali, national road segments that are ready for use span 589.9 km with a stability of 99.55%. In Sumatra, national road segments that are ready for use span 13,417.5 km with a stability of 95.15%.

In Kalimantan, national road segments that are ready for use span 8,036.3 km with a stability of 92.27%. In Sulawesi, national road segments that are ready for use span 8,794 km with a stability of 95.82%.

“Similar to previous years, the task of the PUPR Ministry is to prepare land transportation infrastructure in the form of roads and bridges for the homecoming and return [traffic],” Basuki said.

The PUPR Ministry will continue to coordinate with the Transportation Ministry, the Indonesian National Police, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), toll road business enterprises (BUJTs), and other relevant ministries/institutions to anticipate the surge in passengers approaching the Eid 1445 Hijriah holiday.

During the occasion, Basuki also revealed that toll roads spanning 134.67 km might operate on a functional basis to support Eid homecoming traffic in Sumatra.

“The length of toll roads that might operate on a functional basis for the 2024 Eid homecoming period spans 134.67 km,” he explained.

Basuki also said that, for this year’s homecoming period, 9,008 toilets have been prepared in rest areas, comprising of 6,175 existing units and 2,833 additional units.

Siaga Sapta Taruna posts are strategically positioned throughout the national road network, with emergency response teams ready to anticipate emergency situations in disaster-prone areas (floods, standing water, and landslides).

Checking operational feasibility

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi ensures that he has implemented various measures and efforts to serve the public during the 2024 Eid homecoming and return period with various modes of transportation.

“The Eid momentum has been prepared carefully. We are welcoming it by coordinating various aspects from fuel availability to transportation service,” Budi said during the occasion.

Budi said that the Transportation Ministry has prepared the transportation sector as best as possible to face the Eid homecoming period by conducting ramp checks on vehicles as well as facilities and infrastructure.

Besides that, the Transportation Ministry has also established cross-sector coordination to prepare homecoming posts that will be established from 3 to 18 April so that travellers can reach their hometown and return safely and comfortably.

“We are coordinating more intensely with the Indonesian National Police. They will announce when one way and contra flow policies will be implemented,” Budi explained.

Budi said that homecoming during Eid was a happy national tradition. It is a dream of many people each year to go home to meet their loved ones, so the Transportation Ministry strives to provide the best service with the motto ‘Mudik Ceria Penuh Makna’ (Meaningful and Happy Homecoming).

“This massive endeavour necessitates collaboration. The President even repeatedly ordered [us] to help him provide the best service,” Budi said.

Budi mentioned that the Transportation Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Statistics Indonesia, and other survey institutions, has conducted a survey predicting that 193.6 million individuals are expected to travel during the 2024 Eid holiday.
