Jakarta - The airport managed by PT Angkasa Pura/AP I (Persero), I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, in Bali cumulatively served 11,887,437 passengers from January to July 2023, which reaches 95% of the realisation in 2022. Meanwhile, two airports managed by PT Angkasa Pura/AP II (Persero), Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Kualanamu Airport, are getting more expansive as they have added more flight routes.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport General Manager Handy Heryudhitiawan is optimistic about the airport in Bali serving 20 million passengers at the end of this year.

“The airport’s traffic is increasing and getting more intensive. So, coordination will be conducted with related stakeholders to open new routes to Bali. So, we are optimistic about serving 20 million passengers in 2023,” Handy said in his official statement on Wednesday (9/8/2023).

Throughout July 2023, Ngurah Airport served 1,150,051 international passengers. In detail, there were 581,803 arriving passengers and 568,248 departing passengers with 5,819 movements. Meanwhile, the number of domestic passengers reached 993,598, which consists of 483,339 arriving passengers and 510,259 departing passengers with 6,775 aircraft movements.

“With domestic routes, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali served 2,143,649 passengers in a month with 12,594 movements,” he said.

According to Handy, Singapore was the busiest international route in July 2023. “Regarding international routes, Singapore is the busiest route with 247,23 passengers,” Handy said.

After Singapore, Angkasa Pura I logged that Kuala Lumpur was the second busiest route at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport with 141,294 passengers, followed by Melbourne with 92,345 passengers.

Regarding airlines, Jetstar Airways has the most movements with 724 international route aircraft movements that served 156,450 passengers. Next, there is Indonesia Air Asia with 684 movements that served 107,079 passengers and Batik Air Malaysia with 472 movements that served 94,778 passengers.

“Meanwhile, even though Emirates only logged 124 aircraft movements, they served 62,779 passengers. It is because of the high load factor of Emirates’ A380 aircrafts that reaches 95%,” Handy said.

The busiest domestic route of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport is led by Soekarno-Hatta International Airport with 508,375 passengers, followed by Surabaya with 132,893 passengers and Bandung with 53,655 passengers.

Soekarno-Hatta and Kualanamu

On the other hand, PT Angkasa Pura/AP II (Persero) President Director Muhammad Awaluddin said that the growth of flight routes at Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Kualanamu Airport was increasingly strong amid the post-Covid-19 recovery period. Both hub airports continue to open new flight routes, reactivate routes closed during the pandemic, and increase flight frequency on existing routes.

“Recently, at the start of August 2023, both airports opened international routes. Soekarno-Hatta opened Jakarta-Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) route served by Vietjet Air on 5 August 2023. Then, on 7 August 2023, Jakarta-Mumbai (India) route was opened by IndiGo,” Awaluddin explained.

Then, Awaluddin continued that Medan-Chennai (India) route would be opened at Kualanamu Airport on 11 August 2023 by Batik Air. Besides that, a new flight route from Medan to a city in India and vice versa will also be opened by IndiGo.

Awaluddin said that the international routes were opened to strengthen connectivity at both airports.

It is in line with the roles of Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Kualanamu Airport as hubs that have a wider flight network compared to other airports.

Aircraft passengers can fly to Soekarno-Hatta Airport or Kualanamu Airport to transfer and continue their travel to the next destination. Regarding this matter, both airports play an important role to positively impact other airports and be a catalyst for flight recovery.

“The opening of international routes is strengthening Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Kualanamu Airport as hubs that connect businesses and tourists overseas to domestic destinations,” Awaluddin said.

Awaluddin said that the improvement in international connectivity was also AP II’s effort to optimise slot times to improve the commercial aspect.

“During the current flight recovery period, the demand for domestic and international routes is increasing. AP II with stakeholders is managing and accommodating the high demand to provide the best services for the people and pay attention to the commercial aspect,” Muhammad Awaluddin said.

This year, after the Covid-19 pandemic, the contribution of international passengers increased to 24% from 22% last year during the pandemic.

“Currently, the composition of aircraft passengers at AP II is cumulatively 76% domestic passengers and 24% international passengers. Last year, during the pandemic, the composition was 78% domestic passengers and 22% international passengers,” Awaluddin explained.

To maintain the positive momentum, AP II is continuously prioritising collaborations with all stakeholders.
