Jakarta, ID – The Indonesian government, through the Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Ministry, is enhancing its cooperation with the South Korean government in the road sector. This collaboration is being highlighted at the 19th Indonesia-Korea Road Conference (IKRC) forum in Yogyakarta.

Highways Director General of the PUPR Ministry Rachman Arief Dienaputra stated that the 19th IKRC serves as a platform for sharing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and collectively shaping the future of roads in Indonesia.

According to him, both Indonesia and South Korea are experiencing positive economic growth, which is supported by an ever-improving connectivity infrastructure network.

“Roads play a crucial role in economic growth, social development, and regional integration. Additionally, both Indonesia and [South Korea] are experiencing rapid urbanisation and economic growth, which place significant pressure on their road infrastructure,” Rachman Arief said in his press statement on Monday (5/8/2024).

Arief added that Indonesia faced several challenges, including road maintenance, improvement, and expansion, as well as traffic congestion, road safety, and sustainable road infrastructure development.

“Therefore, this conference is expected to generate innovative solutions for these challenges,” he added.

At the 19th IKRC, several topics were discussed, including the implementation of the Structural Health Monitoring System (SHMS) in Indonesia, the application of in-slope technology for road asset management, the use of CCTV-AI for traffic monitoring, and the implementation of AI on smart roads in Nusantara Capital City (IKN).

Meanwhile, South Korea Road Policy Division Director Tae Suk Kang emphasised that the cooperation between the two countries needed to improve both in quantity and quality.

“The bilateral relationship between the governments of Indonesia and South Korea is expected to fulfill the infrastructure development aspirations of both countries in Indonesia,” he stated.
