Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry with Palembang Local Government is continuously increasing the number of feeders for South Sumatra Light Rail Transit (LRT) to increase the ridership of the mass transportation in Palembang City.

“The LRT need to have many feeders. The collaboration between the Transportation Ministry and Palembang Local Government to provide feeders has been satisfactory. In the future, we will tap private companies,” Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said in his statement after observing South Sumatra LRT and its angkot (public minivan) feeders in Palembang in South Sumatra on Sunday (19/02/2023).

The Transportation Minister revealed that a national bank had stated that they were ready to participate to provide feeder service for South Sumatra LRT.

“The upcoming [feeder] is from Bank Mandiri. Through their CSR program. They will provide feeders, but they are unique. They look like jeepneys in Manila in the Philippines,” the Transportation Minister said.

Furthermore, the Transportation Minister said that this feeder transportation was unique, so it could be a new icon in Palembang City to attract citizens.

“Palembang is famous for its delicious food, and now we must prepare a unique feeder to provide a memorable experience for citizens in Palembang and the people who come there,” the Transportation Minister said.

The Transportation Minister hopes that, in the next six months, the addition of the unique feeder in Palembang City can be implemented to increase the interest of the people in Palembang and its surroundings in using mass transportation.

Previously, President Joko Widodo said that the government was committed to prioritising the use of mass transportation in urban areas, such as Palembang City. Hence, the development of mass transportation, such as South Sumatra LRT that is the first LRT in Indonesia, must be continuously carried out.

The Transportation Minister added that Palembang City was one of the exemplary cities for urban mass transportation development as it has complete mass transportation services from buses, LRT, angkot, to river and lake transportation facilities that are all connected.
