Subang, ID – The investment amount to construct Patimban Port that has reached Rp43.22 trillion must be optimised by driving the port to become a world-class terminal.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlanga Hartarto said that, since its operation in 2021, Patimban Port has held a key role in boosting the strength of the national economy by connecting industrial estates in several areas, such as West Java, Central Java, and East Java, to the international market.

Not only as a symbol for economic growth, the construction of the national strategic project (PSN) is also a comprehensive form of Indonesia’s vision to construct sustainable infrastructure and improve the welfare of citizens.

Between December 2021 and December 2023, Patimban Port successfully facilitated stevedoring service for 189,948 domestic completely built units (CBUs) and 268,968 international CBUs at its car terminal, utilising 20 multipurpose ships. Presently, the initial stage of phase 1 of Patimban Port has been completed and is operational, with the construction of phase 1 stage 2 still in progress.

“The investment is large. It is such a waste to not optimise it. Patimban Port must be driven to be a world-class terminal,” Airlangga said when he visited the construction of Patimban Port in Subang Regency in West Java on Wednesday (24/1/2024).

Coordinating Minister Airlangga explained that Patimban Port significantly impacted the Rebana metropolitan area, which spans seven regencies/cities, namely Subang, Indramayu, Cirebon, Majalengka, Sumedang, Kuningan, and Cirebon City. The Rebana area is estimated to boost economic growth to 7.16%, open 4.39 million jobs, and increase investment by 7.77%.

Besides that, there is a proposal that an industrial estate PSN with an overall investment value of Rp169.9 trillion will support Patimban Port that mainly focuses on the production of semiconductors, electronics, and petrochemical.

According to him, the construction of Patimban Port is meant to reduce logistics costs by bringing production centres closer, which strengthens economic resilience. With an investment value of Rp43.22 trillion, Patimban Port is also expected to reduce traffic jams in Jakarta by dividing the traffic going to Patimban.

“So, the northern corridor in Java is expected to be more efficient with the port, and it [the port] is also expected to facilitate traffic in Jakarta to not be too congested,” he stated.

Toll road completed in 2025

The construction of the port that reaches 369 hectares is also supported by the construction of Patimban Port access toll road that will facilitate access from and to Patimban Port. With a total investment cost of Rp5.02 trillion, the construction of the Patimban Port access toll road that started at the start of 2024 will span 37.05 km with 22.94 km being the government’s portion and 14.11 km being the portion of the toll road business entity (BUJT).

Coordinating Minister Airlangga affirmed that the Patimban Port access toll road in Subang, West Java could be completed in 2025. “Currently, it is still on progress. We are expecting it to be completed in 2025. The toll road is important as it is an access for logistics and containers to enter Patimban Port,” Airlangga said.

He said that the availability of a toll road as an access to Patimban Port was crucial. The current road access still relies on the national road going through the Subang northern coast route. “The cost is high, but we are optimistic about slowly suppressing logistics costs. Moreover, if the Patimban Port access toll road can be completed on time,” he affirmed.

The completion of the Patimban Port access toll road is accelerated through the BUJT PT Jasa Marga Akses Patimban. The total length of the toll road reaches 37 km. In detail, 14.11 km of the toll road is built by the BUJT and 22.94 km is built by the government.

The infrastructure at Patimban Port is designed to handle 218,000 units of vehicles earmarked for export. In 2023, the port exceeded expectations by accommodating 223,000 export-ready vehicles. Furthermore, in its initial phase, the port is poised to handle up to 3.5 million TEUs of containers.

“From what we can see, Indonesia’s automotive export increases each year. In the port area, 218,000 units have been prepared. Last year, [the realisation] surpassed 100% [of the target]. So, it can be utilised optimally,” Airlangga said.

According to him, Patimban Port is the vein of the Rebana area, and it also supports industrial estates in Bekasi, Karawang, and Purwakarta. Coordinating Minister Airlangga also explained that automotive products that will be exported to various countries, such as Japan and Singapore, can go through Patimban Port.

The government is committed to the ongoing development of Patimban Port, investing Rp18 trillion in the first stage, followed by an allocation of Rp14 trillion for the second stage. Additionally, the investment in the associated toll road infrastructure amounts to approximately Rp10 trillion.

Patimban International Port is an effort for future national development that has been set as a PSN in Presidential Regulation Number 47 of 2016 on Designation of Patimban Port in Subang Regency, West Jawa Province as a National Strategic Project.

Patimban Port, the Patimban Port access toll road, as well as the plan to construct a hinterland through Patimban Industrial Estate are expected to improve connectivity and logistics efficiencies in Indonesia, which will strengthen economic growth and improve competitiveness on the international level.
