Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that the commercial operation of Jabodebek LRT could commence on Indonesia’s 78th Independence Day if the three trials were successful. The three trials are implemented to ensure the safety aspect of the modern rail-based mass transportation before its commercial operation.

“The trials are conducted up to five days before 18 August so that we can make an immediate report to the President. If the trials are successful, the commercial operation of Jabodebek LRT can commence on Indonesia’s 78th Independence Day,” the Transportation Minister said in his official statement after directly checking the trial process of Jabodebek LRT last weekend.

The Transportation Minister explained that the three trials consisted of the first stage that operated all LRT trains to ensure the security aspect and the safety aspect of all trains that would operate. Next, the second stage will operate the trains with the maximum passenger capacity.

“The second stage of the trial will ensure the service and the comfort for passengers. Then, the third stage will conduct the trial with a tight headway and a round trip route,” he stated.

Furthermore, the Transportation Minister directly checked the trial of Jabodebek LRT again on Saturday (29/7/2023). After participating in the trial of Jabodebek LRT from Dukuh Atas Station in Jakarta, to Harjamukti Station in Depok, and to Jatimulya Station in East Bekasi, the Transportation Minister mentioned that the train was smoother and more comfortable.

“I am happy as it has improved from the previous trial. I am asking the operator to fix and improve any weakness,” the Transportation Minister said.

Besides the LRT, the Transportation Minister also visited the Operation Control Centre (OCC) of Jabodebek LRT to provide directions and motivate the staff that include train attendants, OCC officers, and Jabodebek LRT station heads. The Transportation Minister also allowed the staff to deliver their aspirations for input and evaluation.

“When the train operates, we cannot stop or back down. There will be many complaints from the people. Hence, we have to ensure excellent quality control and safety level,” the Transportation Minister said.

Software update

On the other hand, the Railways Directorate General ensures that the software update for the operation of Jabodebek LRT is nearly complete and is ready for a limited trial with passengers. Railways Director General Risal Wasal mentioned that the software update process for the operation of Jabodebek LRT has entered the stage of improving the integration system between the facilities and the passenger screen doors (PSDs) on station platforms.

“The train has been tested and it stopped at the platform. Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God), [the train] is currently smoother and more comfortable compared to the last trial,” Risal said in his official statement in Jakarta on Wednesday (26/7/2023).

The software update of Jabodebek LRT updates the automatic train supervision (ATS) system and the train guard mass transit (TMGT) system that control the distance and the interval between trains during driverless operation. Both systems are required for the operation to achieve grade of automation (GoA) level 3 to ensure the security and the safety of train trips.

To ensure the readiness of the system after the software update, the Railways Directorate General will also test the integration system from 27 to 28 July 2023 before Jabodetabek LRT is deemed ready to carry passengers.

“We will review the result of the trial run conducted by the operator while we wait for the improvement process of the platform door integration system to be completed,” Risal said.
