Jakarta - PT Industri Kereta Api (Persero) is offering the option to retrofit commuter line trainsets of PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia that will be retired in 2023-2024.

PT Industri Kereta Api (Inka) President Director Eko Purwanto explained that the retrofit or the revitalisation could prolong the use of the used commuter line trains from Japan by up to 10 years.

He explained that the option to retrofit would replace or renew technologies and features on old trains.

He said that several benefits of the retrofitting option were that it is more efficient, requires little maintenance, and spare parts are guaranteed.

“We are preparing the study to retrofit the commuter line trains of KCI. Basically, we will only retrofit the body, while the technologies are replaced with new ones,” he explained at the hearing with House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VI on Monday (27/3).

He forecasts that retrofitting old commuter line trains will take around 16 months. The manufacturing process will go through several stages, namely engineering, design, procurement, production, testing, and delivery.

Eko said that trainsets that have been revitalised could operate for more than 10 more years. The technologies upgraded on the commuter line trains include the propulsion, the motor generator, and others.

He added that Inka could not confirm if the commuter line trains that will be retired in 2023-2024 will be retrofitted.  According to him, that decision relies on PT KCI as the operator of Jabodetabek (Greater Jakarta) Commuter Line.

“As it is a re-engineering, we continue to calculate smartly and accurately so that the result is appropriate,” he added.

Meanwhile, Development Finance Comptroller (BPKP) spokesperson Azwad Zamroddin Hakim is still following up the audit to import 10 used commuter line trainsets from Japan. According to him, BPKP is still preparing the audit plan.
