Jakarta - The Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Ministry is allocating 10 national road preservation packages as alternative routes to connect Lampung-South Sumatra on top of the Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar segment of Trans-Sumatra toll road.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that interregional connectivity was needed so that the mobility of cargo, services, and passengers was more efficient. Smoother connectivity is expected to improve regional economic growth to accelerate construction in the region.

“Improved road access will sustain the economy of locals,” Minister Basuki said in his official statement in Jakarta on Friday (26/5/2023).

He explained that national road handling in Lampung Province was handled by the PUPR Ministry through Lampung National Road Implementation Centre (BPJN) with 10 road and bridge preservation packages in 2023, which included Pematang Panggang-Bujung Tenuk Interchange (Penawar Interchange-Gedong Aji Baru-Rawajitu) road and bridge preservation, Bujung Tenuk Interchange-Central Lampung Regency/East Lampung Border (Bujung Tenuk Interchange-Terbanggi Besar segment) road and bridge segment preservation.

They also include Central Lampung/East Lampung Regency Border-Way Jepara-Bakauheni Interchange road and bridge segment preservation, Tegineneng-Tanjung Karang Interchange-KM 10 (Terbanggi Besar-Tegineneng-Sukadana) road and bridge segment preservation, KM 10 (Panjang)-Bakauheni (Jalan Prof.Dr.Ir. Sutami-Jalan Sribawono-Sribawano Interchange) road segment preservation, and Sanggi-Gedong-Tataan road and bridge segment preservation.

Other national road maintenance projects include Gunung Kemala Interchange-Sanggi road and bridge segment preservation, Bengkulu Border-Gunung Kemala Interchange-Padang Tambak road and bridge segment preservation, Padang Tambak-Bukit Kemuning-South Sumatra Border road segment preservation, Bukit Kemuning-Terbanggi Besar road and bridge segment preservation, and Gedong Tataan-Jalan Monginsidi (Tanjung Karang Interchange-KM10 segment; Tanjung Karang Interchange-Kurung Nyawa) road segment preservation.

Meanwhile, Lampung BPJN Head Susan Novelia said that the preservation programme must be carried out annually to maintain road stability.

“There is currently a preservation programme that uses the long segment scheme, which is an overall maintenance scheme for road segments that focuses on the performance of the service provider,” Susan said.

National roads in Lampung Province are arterial roads and a collection of primary road network systems that are connected to Bakauheni Port and South Sumatra Province besides Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar toll road. Overall, all national roads that are under the authority of Lampung BPJN span 1,298.41 km that consist of the eastern highway spanning 285.18 km, the central highway spanning 323.92 km, the western highway spanning 323.62 km, the connecting highway spanning 347.69 km, and Bandar Lampung inner city roads spanning 18 km.

Previously, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) visited Lampung, Jambi, and North Sumatra to see the damaged roads in the three provinces. The President immediately took over the repairs, especially of roads that are the responsibility of regional governments.

“We are taking over roads that regency or local and provincial [governments] cannot [repair], so we are taking over some of them. Some are still the responsibility of provincial, regency, and local [governments],” Jokowi said when he checked the damaged roads in North Sumatra some time ago.

Lampung is the first location he visited at the start of May. At the time, damaged roads in Lampung went viral on social media. After conducting the visit, he revealed that the roads have been damaged for a long time, which was why they would be taken over by the central government. The government will disburse Rp800 billion to repair 15 road segments in Lampung Province.
