The construction of this terminal is part of the national type A terminal revitalisation programme that is conducted by the Transportation Ministry through the Land Transportation Directorate General. The revitalisation in carried out so that terminal facilities and services improve to encourage the people to use buses.
“In line with the direction from President Joko Widodo, the government is continuously increasing the use of mass transportation. Hence, the construction of bus terminals in Solo, Salatiga, Demak, Purwokerto, and Purworejo will add another function to the terminals, which is as an activity centre for the people. This function can be sustainable,” the Transportation Minister said in his official statement.
By implementing the mix-use concept, the terminals currently have three main functions. Not only as a location for people to get on and off the bus, but also as an infrastructure that boosts and drives regional economy and as a centre for social, art, and cultural activities. Through this concept, the terminals are fitted with several facilities, such as a commercial area for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), culinary areas, public services, hotels, shopping centres, multipurpose rooms, and other facilities.
“The new location of the terminal construction in Purworejo is more strategic, and the land has been granted. The new terminal is expected to improve the services of road transportation, such as buses,” the Transportation Minister stated.
The new terminal is constructed at a new location, which is located around 500 metres from the existing terminal. The existing terminal has operated since 1994, and it was set as a type A terminal in 2003.
The Transportation Minister stated that he was thankful to Central Java Provincial Government and Purworejo Regency Government that have granted lands of 1.18 hectares.
“The synergy among the central government and the regional government is a good example for other regions to realise a land transportation service that is safe, secure, and comfortable,” the Transportation Minister said.
Meanwhile, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo welcomes the construction of the new terminal in Purworejo. According to him, it can be utilised by artists, MSMEs, and bus users.
“I hope that the terminal that has more complete facilities can improve the people’s economy in Purworejo and its vicinity,” Ganjar stated.
