24 May 2024

PT Jasa Armada Indonesia Tbk (IPCM) has been directly appointed by the government through the Ministry of Transportation to provide ship pilotage and tugging services in the waters around Obi Island at Laiwui Port in North Maluku Province.

“The government has entrusted [the company] to conduct pilotage and tugging services in the waters around the southern coast of Obi Island. We are committed to continuously improving these services to ensure ship safety, increase cargo volume, and maintain the trust of the public, shareholders, and business partners,” IPCM President Director Shanti Puruhita said in her official statement on Wednesday (22/5/2024).

Shanti revealed that Obi Island in South Halmahera, North Maluku, would be developed into a mining and nickel smelting centre with an annual nickel sulphate production capacity of up to 240,000 tonnes. This initiative is part of a national strategic project to support nickel downstreaming development in eastern Indonesia. Since 2010, the mining process for nickel, limonite, and saprolite ores has been conducted by Harita Nickel, a mining and processing industry group, through PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (NCKL).

“The area's prospects are promising. IPCM will provide pilotage services for cargo ships carrying nickel as nickel sulphate is a key material for the cathode precursor in electric vehicle batteries. The nickel sulphate plant here is the first in Indonesia and the largest in the world by production capacity. The initial export of nickel sulphate took place in June 2023.,” Shanti revealed.

Furthermore, Shanti added that Indonesia has the largest nickel sulphate plant in the world operated by an affiliation of Harita Nickel. “IPCM is excited about providing pilotage and tugging services in the waters around Obi Island. We are committed to supporting the government's efforts in establishing the downstreaming industry, which will deliver a sustainable economic impact,” she stated.

Shanti added that Jasa Armada would actively strengthen its business by forming numerous service partnerships for pilotage and tugging services in various locations with strategic partners. To date, IPCM has extended its business cooperation agreements for these services with PT Cemindo Gemilang in Bayah (Banten) and PT Nusantara Regas in Kepulauan Seribu.

“In line with the company’s business expansion, IPCM is committed to maintaining excellent environmental management. Additionally, we will contribute to the local community through targeted social aid programmes,” she added.
