Jakarta - Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Minister Basuki Hadimuljono revealed that Presidential Instruction on Drinking Water and Sanitation was issued to utilise existing water treatment plants.

“We have installed house connections to existing water treatment plants, so we do not need to build new water treatment plants,” Basuki said during the work meeting with House of Representatives (DPR) Commission V in Jakarta on Monday (20/11/2023).

He continued that Presidential Instruction on Drinking Water and Sanitation was issued to utilise the water treatment plants constructed by the PUPR Ministry.

Presidential Instruction on Drinking Water and Sanitation will be one of the PUPR Ministry’s programmes next year. The ministry’s programmes will include infrastructure development as directed by the President and presidential instruction implementation, which includes Presidential Instruction on Regional Roads and Presidential Instruction on Drinking Water and Sanitation.

Another programme of the PUPR Ministry in 2024 is the OPOR (Operation, Maintenance, Optimisation, and Rehabilitation) Programme.

The Indonesian government through National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) has initiated Presidential Instruction on Drinking Water and Sanitation that has been approved by President Joko Widodo at the limited meeting that discussed drinking water provision system (SPAM) development.

As reported by Antara, the presidential instruction will take effect next year. This initiative requires a budget of Rp16.6 trillion. These funds will not be used for the construction of water treatment plants. Instead, they will be allocated towards the installation of house connections, with the goal of reaching 10 million households.

The government already has many water treatment plants, including national strategic projects (PSNs) and regional strategic projects.

There are 6.2 million house connections that are ready to be installed in areas where there are functional water treatment plants. Therefore, the only task remaining for the PUPR Ministry is to install these house connections.
