Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry is targeting the development of MRT East-West Corridor to commence in 2024.

The Indonesian government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have signed the minutes of discussion (MoD) of appraisal mission of MRT East-West Corridor Phase 1 Stage 1 in Jakarta on Saturday (12/11/2023).

Railways Director General Risal Wasal said that, after signing the MoD, the Transportation Ministry through the Railways Directorate General would complete the administrative requirements of the MRT project.

“We are targeting the administrative matter to be completed so that the development process of MRT East-West [Corridor] can commence in 2024,” Risal said in Jakarta last weekend.

Jakarta MRT East-West Corridor will span 84.1 km from Balaraja in Tangerang to Cikarang in Bekasi. During the construction, the project will be divided into four stages, namely Phase 1 Stage 1 (Tomang – Medan Satria spanning 30.1 km), Phase 1 Stage 2 (Kembangan – Tomang spanning 9.2 km), Phase 2 East (Medan Satria – Cikarang spanning 20.5 km), and Phase 2 West (Kembangan Balaraja spanning 29.9 km).

“Jakarta MRT East-West Corridor will be integrated with the North-South corridor. Both corridors will meet at Thamrin Station that is currently under construction,” Risal said.

At the start of the construction, Phase 1 Stage 1 of Jakarta MRT East-West Corridor will cover 21 stations that consist of 8 underground stations and 13 elevated stations. Besides that, during the stage, a depot will be constructed in Rorotan with an access route spanning 5.9 km.

Furthermore, the signing of the MoD was conducted by Railways Director General Risal Wasal, Bappenas Bilateral Funding Director Kurniawan Ariadi, Jakarta Province Regional Secretary Joko Agus Setiono, and MRT Jakarta President Director Tuhiyat that represent Indonesia with JICA Chief of Representative Indonesia Office Yasui Takehiro. The signing was witnessed by Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, Acting Jakarta Governor Heru Budi Hartono, and Embassy of Japan Deputy Chief of Mission Nagai Katsuro.

“I expect MRT East-West Corridor to progress excellently to be completed on time. So, it can be enjoyed immediately by the people,” the Transportation Minister said.

The Transportation Minister explained that the construction of the MRT project was in line with the RIPN to improve the mass transportation network and its users.

“We must be consistent in carrying out rail-based urban mass transportation development, which includes MRT, LRT, and Commuter Line,” the Transportation Minister said.
