Jakarta - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated Sei Selayu Centralised Domestic Wastewater Management System (SPALDT) worth Rp1.32 trillion in Palembang, South Sumatra on Thursday (26/10/2023). The construction of the wastewater management system is crucial to improving public health and environmental quality, especially around Musi River in Palembang, South Sumatra.

“We know that Musi River is crucial for the people in South Sumatra, especially for the ones in Palembang. Hence, the domestic wastewater management system is important to reducing pollution in Musi River, which can endanger the health of the people in Palembang and reduce environmental quality,” President Jokowi said in his official statement on Thursday (26/10/2023).

The President also said that he welcomed the wastewater management system that was built with a budget of Rp1.32 trillion through a cooperation among the central government through the Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Ministry, South Sumatra Provincial Government, Palembang Local Government, and the Australian government.

“I would like to thank the Australian government through Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams. For nine years, I have inaugurated various infrastructure, such as toll roads, dams, airports, and drinking water [supply systems], but it is the first time I have inaugurated a centralised domestic wastewater management system,” the President stated.

Minister Basuki said that the construction of the SPALDT in Palembang was part of the Palembang City Sewerage Project (PCSP) and an example of a good collaboration.

“The grant from the Australian government is around Rp690 billion, which was used to construct the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that serves 120,000 people. The central government through an APBN (State budget) of Rp632 billion constructed the pipeline network until the tertiary network. Then, the provincial government and the local government constructed the household connection network and provided the land,” Minister Basuki said.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams said that the WWTP construction was a concrete example of cooperation between the Australian government and Indonesia in infrastructure development.

“The attendance of the President at the event today shows a strong commitment between the Indonesian government and Australia,” Penny said.

Meanwhile, Human Settlements Director General of the PUPR Ministry Diana Kusumastuti said that package B2 A of PCSP that is the main pipeline network and the reticulation that was constructed using the state budget by the contractor PT Adhi Karya worth Rp236 billion has been completed. Meanwhile, package A2 that includes the construction of the domestic wastewater management installation and Pump Station A that was built using the grant from the Australian government worth Rp455 billion and package B2 B that includes the main pipeline network and the reticulation that was built using the state budget worth Rp191 billion are set to be completed in December 2023.
