Jakarta - The Railways Directorate General of the Transportation Ministry is considering operating more Jabodebek Light Rail Transit (LRT) trainsets following the public’s high enthusiasm to use the mass transportation.

Railways Director General Risal Wasal said that the number of Jabodebek LRT trainsets was planned to be increased to 16, then it will be increased again in stages to 27 trainsets. Currently, only 14 trainsets are operating.

“By increasing the number of trainsets to 16, the headway can be reduced to 7.5-15 minutes with travel time reaching 50-54 minutes,” Risal Wasal said in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/9/2023).

Risal revealed that, until Friday (9/9/2023), the number of passengers served by Jabodebek LRT has reached 471,847 people.

“Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God), Jabodebek LRT is almost always crowded. In a day, we can carry up to 56,286 passengers. We are optimistic about the number continuing to increase,” Risal said.

Besides the public’s high enthusiasm, Risal explained that the number of trainsets could be increased thanks to the increase in the on-time performance (OTP). Based on the data, from 5 to 9 September 2023, Jabodebek LRT’s OTP reached 81.0% with an average delay of 1.9 minutes.

However, Risal is encouraging the operator to ensure that existing issues have been fully resolved before increasing the number of operating trainsets.

“Resolve the identified issues and operate in accordance with the set standards/regulations,” Risal affirmed.

Furthermore, Risal mentioned that Jabodebek LRT’s operating schedule would also be evaluated to accommodate input from the public.

“We are issuing a recommendation so that Jabodebek LRT can operate later at night from 5:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) to 8:00 PM WIB. So, it can carry people who go home late. Hopefully, it can be realised after the increase in the number of trainsets,” Risal explained.

Previously, Transportation Minister Spokesperson Adita Irawati also said that the public’s enthusiasm was very high to try the modern rail-based mass transportation.

“Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God), the feedback has been relatively positive. Even though there are some notes that we need to evaluate regarding the operation of Jabodebek LRT,” Adita said last week.

From its inauguration on 28 August 2023, Adita said that the Transportation Ministry and stakeholders of Jabodebek LRT have been continuously improving its service to follow up the evaluation and the input from the public. Regarding evaluation, Adita explained that the follow-up process by related stakeholders was directly supervised by the Transportation Ministry through the Railways Directorate General.

“There are four main issues that have been reported, which include the train doors, the passenger information screen, the electricity, and the operating system that are currently being handled by Inka, PT KAI’s Jabodebek LRT Division, and related stakeholders. They are set to be completed between early September and late October,” Adita said.

High-speed railway

On the other hand, PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) ensures that the trial run of Jakarta-Bandung High-speed Railway (KCJB) will be carried out on schedule.

KCIC announced that the trial run of the high-speed railway would be carried out from Tegalluar Station in Bandung Regency to Halim Station in East Jakarta and vice versa safely and smoothly.

“All facilities and infrastructure of the high-speed railway from Tegalluar to Halim will operate in accordance with the set trial run schedule. It will be carried out safely without a hitch,” KCIC Corporate Secretary Eva Chairunisa said earlier this week.

Previously, on Monday (11/9/2023), there was a spark on the roof of the eastern platform at Halim Station. Hence, KCIC immediately coordinated with East Jakarta Fire Management and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat).

The spark that was seen at 0:30 AM WIB has been extinguished by the firefighters. On Monday, Halim Station was ensured to be in a safe condition. Furthermore, Eva said that KCIC has ensured that the situation at Halim Station has been determined to be safe.

“No damages in the area or outside of Halim Station,” Eva revealed.

KCIC has also coordinated with PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk or WIKA as the contractor and East Jakarta Gulkarmat to control the situation.

“KCIC ensures that the station can function excellently and all staff can complete their work without a hitch, so the high-speed railway’s operation can be carried out in accordance with the specified stage,” Eva said.

KCJB is the first high-speed railway in Indonesia and Southeast Asia that will operate at a speed of 350 km per hour. The high-speed railway that spans 142.3 km through 13 tunnels will serve four stations, namely Halim, Karawang, Padalarang, and Tegalluar.
