PwC Japan Group
9 November 2022
Tokyo, Japan, 9 November 2022 - The PwC Japan Group (HQ: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; chair: Koichiro Kimura; hereinafter ‘PwC Japan’) today announced their participation in the SAF* Flight Initiative of All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (HQ: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Shinichi Inoue; hereinafter ‘ANA’). This is part of PwC’s science-based commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our global network by 2030. Through the use of SAF, PwC Japan aims to further reduce GHG emissions generated from air travel by PwC Japan partners and staff (Scope 3, Category 6: Business travel) and to support decarbonisation efforts in the Japanese market.
*SAF: Sustainable aviation fuel’
As a countermeasure against climate change and global warming, many countries and companies around the world are working to achieve carbon neutrality. While the commercialisation of SAF has taken off in many Western countries, SAF is still seeing only limited use in Japan, due largely to the difficulties associated with mass-producing SAF and popularising its use. In order for Japanese companies to accelerate their decarbonisation efforts, there is a need to raise awareness of SAF and promote its voluntary use.
The SAF Flight Initiative is a program led by ANA with the goal of decarbonising the aviation industry. Actively working to promote increased use of SAF, ANA started to use SAF for the first time on scheduled flights departing from Japanese airports in 2020.
In addition to the use of SAF, PwC Japan is also engaged in additional efforts to reduce GHG emissions during business travel, including the development of business travel guidelines to encourage sustainable air travel by individual partners and staff. We are also working with our employees to raise awareness through a series of ‘net zero ideathons’.
Through these diverse efforts, PwC Japan is working to promote the use of SAF in Japan and the reduction of GHG emissions, thereby contributing to the realisation of a decarbonised society.
We are delighted that PwC Japan has chosen to participate in the SAF Flight Initiative. The development of practical climate change measures is becoming an urgent problem, and we have seen a corresponding increase in environmental awareness. More and more companies, including PwC Japan, are positioning decarbonisation as an important element of their management strategy. ANA will continue to promote the use of SAF and work with leading companies to expand this initiative, which also visualises non-financial information on how companies are fulfilling their social responsibilities throughout the value chain, and contributes to the realisation of carbon neutrality.
While remote working remains an essential part of our GHG emissions reduction strategy, we also anticipate a continued need for air travel to ensure smooth global communication, as well as a growing demand for SAF in Japan as part of companies’ GHG emissions reduction strategy.
PwC Japan aims to lead sustainable air travel as a pioneer in the corporate use of SAF and GHG emissions reduction. As professionals in the field of GHG emissions reduction, we also hope to contribute to advancing the use of SAF by examining the future aviation market and collaborating with ANA to ultimately achieve the mass production of SAF and its widespread use throughout the world.
