With the rapid progress of digitisation triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, cross-sectoral and cross-border data distribution and utilisation are expanding.
On the flipside, however, various legal issues related to individual rights, such as data protection, have become a hot topic for discussion in various countries around the world.
It is therefore necessary for companies to closely monitor trends in the development of regulatory controls from a global perspective in a timely manner.
In Japan, while recent legal reforms have unified legislation related to personal information protection, it is still necessary to continue to monitor regulatory trends in specific industries. For example, in the telecommunications field, a separate discussion is ongoing regarding the appropriate handling of user information for platform services.
In addition to compliance with such regulations, it is also important to understand trends in the voluntary practices of companies and industry groups, as this is one of the key factors in developing social trust and competitiveness. For example, recently, some companies are actively promoting the protection of consumers’ privacy above data utilisation, which suggests that approaches to balancing interests are changing.
In consideration of the abovementioned trends in regulations and business industries, which may change from time to time, PwC Legal Japan strives to provide optimal legal services by following up on these changes and accumulating the latest knowledge from around the world related to information-related legislations while also leveraging the strengths of the PwC global network.
